Bluesky: The Rising Online Social Media Platform in Brazil After Elon Musk’s X Ban

The Impact of Brazil’s Ban on Elon Musk’s X

Elon Musk’s X has faced yet another setback as it remains banned in Brazil. This decision was made by the Brazilian Supreme Court due to Musk’s failure to appoint a legal representative in the country. In addition, any Brazilian user attempting to access X via VPN now faces hefty fines. As a result, many Brazilian X users have turned to an alternative social media platform called Bluesky, which has seen a significant surge in new users since the ban.

Bluesky Emerges as X Competitor

Bluesky, a micro-blogging platform and rival to X, has gained traction in Brazil following the ban. Although Bluesky is much smaller compared to X and its main competitor, Meta-owned Threads, it has managed to stay competitive. In fact, Bluesky is often considered the third most popular micro-blogging platform, attracting specific niches of users such as artists and those who are more politically progressive.

Initially an invite-only platform, Bluesky quickly grew its user base to 2 million by November 2023 as disillusioned users sought alternatives to X. In February of this year, Bluesky opened its platform to the public, removing the invite requirement. By May, Bluesky was approaching 6 million users. However, thanks to Elon Musk’s ongoing feud with Brazil and the ban on X, Bluesky experienced an impressive influx of 3 million new users in just one week. This surge has brought Bluesky’s total user base to 9 million, with 50 percent of those users joining within the past week.

Bluesky’s Competitive Edge

Despite not having the backing of a company like Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, Bluesky has managed to establish itself as a strong competitor. Its appeal lies in its ability to attract users who were turned off by Musk’s right-wing politics and who sought a more inclusive and artist-friendly platform.

Bluesky has also promised exciting new features to further enhance its appeal. In a recent announcement, the platform revealed that video uploads, a highly requested feature, will soon be available. This addition is likely to attract even more users and further solidify Bluesky’s position as a viable alternative to X.

The Future of Bluesky

With no resolution in sight for Musk’s feud with Brazil, Bluesky is poised to continue benefiting from X’s ban in the country. The ongoing controversy surrounding X has undoubtedly contributed to Bluesky’s recent growth. As the platform expands its user base and introduces new features, it is likely to become a formidable player in the micro-blogging space.

Bluesky’s success demonstrates the power of competition and the importance of providing users with viable alternatives. As more individuals seek platforms that align with their values and preferences, the landscape of social media continues to evolve.
