BMW 3 Series 2024 Updates: Longer Electric Range and New Design
The BMW 3 Series has undergone several updates for the 2024 model year, making it an even more enticing option for car buyers. The brand’s best-selling model will hit the market in July, with prices starting at £39,045 for the 320i saloon and £40,845 for the 320i Touring estate. Notably, the UK market will not be receiving any diesel variants.
One of the key changes in the 2024 3 Series is the introduction of a larger battery for the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models. The new 19.5kWh battery offers a total electric range of 63 miles, which is 22 miles more than the previous version. Although the Mercedes-Benz C300e can travel further on electricity alone with a range of 71 miles, the BMW 330e still outperforms competitors like the Volkswagen Golf GTE, which only manages 40 miles. Additionally, the 330e stays in the 8% benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax band in the UK.
Charging the new battery is also more efficient, with speeds of up to 11kW available for a recharge time of 2 hours and 15 minutes. The battery works in conjunction with an electric motor and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, resulting in a total system output of 296bhp.
In terms of performance, the 320i features a mild-hybrid 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 181bhp. This enables a 0-62mph time of 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. On the other hand, the M340i variant utilizes a 3.0-litre straight-six engine with a 48V starter-generator, delivering 374bhp and 369lb ft. This allows for a quick 0-62mph time of 4.4 seconds.
BMW has also made improvements to the 3 Series’ chassis, focusing on enhancing comfort without sacrificing driving involvement. The rear dampers now have stiffer mounting points, while the steering is faster and more responsive. Additionally, upgraded adaptive dampers are available as an option.
Weight reduction was another area of focus for BMW. The 3 Series features an aluminium bonnet, front wheel arches, engine subframe, and front spring struts. Although the exact weight figures have not been released yet, these lightweight components contribute to improved overall efficiency.
Visually, the changes to the exterior design are subtle but effective. The front bumper is cleaner and more aerodynamic, while the sills have a more angular look. New 19-inch alloy designs and nine additional paint finishes are also available.
Inside the cabin, BMW has adopted a clean and minimalist approach. Buttons have been reduced in favor of a 14.9-inch touchscreen that runs the latest-generation iDrive system. The touchscreen features a widget bar that can be customized with the driver’s preferred functions. Other notable interior features include augmented reality for the sat-nav, 5G connectivity, and integration with the MyBMW app.
BMW has also brought some premium features from its larger models to the 3 Series. The sports steering wheel and air-vent design are new additions, as are the ambient lighting designs that can alert the driver to incoming phone calls or open doors. Optional upholstery options include M Performtex seats, while interior trim pieces like dark graphite matt, grey blue ash wood, and carbon fiber and aluminum inserts provide a touch of luxury.
Overall, the updates to the BMW 3 Series for the 2024 model year make it an even more compelling choice for car buyers. With a longer electric range, improved performance, and enhanced comfort and technology features, the 3 Series continues to set the standard in its segment.
