“BMW Unveils Upgraded X3: A Closer Look at the Future of the Popular SUV”

BMW is set to release the fourth generation of its popular X3 model later this year, despite the heavy focus on the electric SUV. The new X3 will feature a range of updates and improvements, including re-engineered elements and a new electric architecture. The exterior of the new X3 will have a bolder look, with a wider kidney grille, higher front end, pronounced wheel arches, and a more sloped roof. The dimensions of the X3 have also increased, with a length of 4755mm and width of 1920mm. The height, however, has been reduced to 1660mm.

Inside, the new X3 will have a new-look dashboard with a display panel housing the digital instruments and infotainment. It will also feature BMW’s latest Android-based operating system, OS9, while retaining the iDrive rotary controller. The center console has been redesigned, with a toggle-style gear selector and a large bin that includes a phone charging pad, cupholders, and USB-C ports. Overall, BMW aims to give the X3 a more upmarket feel.

In terms of performance, BMW plans to offer four variants of the X3 from the start of UK sales. All variants will feature mild-hybrid technology, an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and four-wheel drive as standard. These variants include the xDrive20 (four-cylinder petrol), xDrive20d (four-cylinder diesel), xDrive30e plug-in hybrid, and M50 xDrive (six-cylinder petrol). The plug-in hybrid variant will have an updated powertrain with a larger battery capacity and an increased electric-only range.

During testing, the plug-in hybrid variant proved to be quiet, smooth, and capable both in urban driving and on open roads. The M50 xDrive variant, on the other hand, showcased impressive speed and character, with a faster acceleration time compared to its predecessor. The new X3 has also undergone improvements in its dynamic qualities, with enhancements to steering, body control, and ride comfort.

The production versions of the new X3 are expected to offer up to 40 different driver assistance systems, similar to those found in the larger and more expensive X5. The infotainment system will be faster-reacting and will feature over-the-air software update functionality. Overall, BMW aims to make the new X3 feel more contemporary in terms of technology and operation.

While the future is electric, BMW recognizes the importance of traditional powertrains in the X3. As petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid cars continue to dominate sales, BMW plans to continue offering these options alongside its electric SUVs.

In conclusion, the upcoming fourth-generation BMW X3 promises extensive upgrades in design, chassis, interior, and technology. With its improved driving characteristics, advanced driver assistance systems, and contemporary features, the new X3 aims to meet the demands of family SUV buyers while keeping the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) flag flying.
