“BMW’s Skytop Concept Car Nears Production with Limited Numbers and Potential Delivery in 2025”

BMW’s Skytop Concept car, based on the 8 Series, is nearing homologation and could potentially be produced in limited numbers as early as next year. The car was unveiled at Villa d’Este and features the powerful 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine from the M8, producing 626bhp. The design of the Skytop is inspired by the Z8, with several nods to the 2000s car. BMW’s Design Director, Adrian van Hooydonk, mentioned the possibility of producing a limited run of the Skytop, similar to the 50 units of the 3.0 CSL that were made. This exclusivity would turn the car into a dream car and potentially an instant classic. If there is enough demand for the Skytop, BMW could deliver it within a year.

BMW M CEO Frank van Meel referred to the Skytop as a test balloon, explaining that if there is sufficient interest, the car could be produced. He believes that the demand for the Skytop is high and that the probability of it going into production is also high. BMW wants to show that they are willing to try new things and cater to customer desires by creating special vehicles like the Skytop.

The design of the Concept Skytop combines classic BMW grand tourer proportions with modern elements. The car features a removable Targa-style roof and an integral roll-over hoop. The front end is characterized by a heavily tapered kidney grille, ultra-thin LED headlights, and large vents on the bonnet, giving it an aggressive and sporty look. The rear of the car features thin horizontal brake lights using OLED technology, oval-shaped tailpipes integrated into the bumper, and wide rear haunches that visually elongate the concept.

Inside, the Skytop has a leather-trimmed interior with the latest generation of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system. The seats feature brogue-like accents and stitching, while crystal and stainless steel are used for the gear lever and pedals, respectively. Under the hood, the Skytop is powered by BMW’s most powerful V8 engine, the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged unit, similar to the one found in the most potent M cars.

While technical specifications for the Concept Skytop have not been revealed, it is likely based on BMW’s CLAR platform, which underpins all their models from the 3 Series upwards. If it receives the green light for production, the road-ready version of the Skytop would be expected to replace the current 8 Series and go on sale in early 2026. However, it is unclear if BMW plans to continue offering all three derivatives of the 8 Series (convertible, coupe, and four-door fastback) or focus solely on a luxury convertible.

The Skytop represents a departure from BMW’s recent focus on electric vehicles, as it is powered by a combustion engine. While BMW is preparing to launch its Neue Klasse family of EVs from 2025, the Skytop suggests that the company still sees a future for large-capacity motors in certain segments. With its unique design and powerful engine, the Skytop could become a highly sought-after and collectible car among enthusiasts.
