BTCC Boss Alan Gow Reveals Exciting Innovations for 2024 Season

Alan Gow, the boss of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship, is known for his decisive leadership and commitment to improving the competition. He values the input of others and believes that the best decisions come from listening to different opinions. This year, Gow has introduced several new ideas to enhance the BTCC. One of the major changes is the increase in boost available through the driver’s push-to-pass button. This combined turbo and hybrid-electric boost will make it almost impossible for one driver to score runaway championship wins. Critics have compared the BTCC’s hybrid powertrains to those used in the World Rally Championship, but Gow dismisses these comparisons, stating that the BTCC’s hybrid cars are lighter and have fewer safety concerns.

In addition to changes on the track, Gow has also implemented new qualifying rules inspired by the Indycar series. The qualifying session will be divided into three 10-minute sessions, with the fastest drivers competing in the final session. This format will create a more exciting spectacle and eliminate the opportunity for drivers to slowly improve their lap times. Another change for 2024 is the reintroduction of option tires, which will add an element of risk and strategy to the races. However, winning a race will come with a catch – the winner will have to use the hardest tire in the next race, making back-to-back wins more challenging.

Off the track, the BTCC is embracing social media by making all 30 races available on TikTok, reaching a vast global audience. Despite this shift towards digital platforms, the BTCC still maintains a partnership with ITV to televise eight hours of race coverage every race day. The series is also committed to sustainability and has developed a detailed plan to achieve carbon neutrality. This plan includes changes in transportation, the use of sustainable fuels, and increased recycling and upcycling efforts. These sustainability initiatives will align with the BTCC’s future car and race regulation changes, set to be implemented in 2027.

Gow acknowledges that not everyone will agree with his decisions, but he believes in making choices that are in the best interest of the BTCC. His ability to make quick and decisive decisions sets him apart from committees that may take longer to implement changes. Gow’s leadership and dedication to improving the BTCC have made it the premier car competition in the country. Despite the higher costs associated with racing in the BTCC, teams and drivers continue to be attracted to the championship due to its reputation and high level of competition.
