Bumble Invests in AI and Unveils New Features to Stay Relevant in Changing Dating Landscape

Bumble, the popular dating app, is investing in AI and introducing new features to adapt to changing dating behaviors among younger users. During a recent technology conference, Bumble CEO Lidiane Jones revealed more details about the upcoming AI capabilities of the app, including a photo selection tool and features to assist with conversations and profile creation. The new AI-powered features are set to launch this winter.

One of the new features, Bumble’s photo picker tool, will bring it closer in competition with Tinder, which released its own AI “Photo Selector” feature earlier this summer. This tool suggests selfies from users’ camera rolls. While Tinder currently boasts 9.6 million paying users, Bumble has 2.8 million users as of Q2 2024. Bumble also hinted at additional tools to aid in profile creation, although specific details were not provided.

The company aims to make the profile creation process as smooth as possible while maintaining high standards. Users often experience anxiety when creating their profiles, so Bumble wants to reduce the friction and make it easier for users. However, the exact AI-powered features for profile creation remain unknown.

Bumble could potentially take inspiration from Tinder’s future product roadmap, which includes using generative AI to write bios for dating profiles. This feature would automate the process of coming up with a compelling bio and prompts to attract potential matches. Bumble has not confirmed whether they will implement this feature.

Another area where Bumble could leverage AI is in encouraging users to be more creative with their opening lines. Bumble for Friends, a friendship-focused product, already has an AI-generated icebreaker feature that helps users write messages based on the other person’s profile. It would make sense for Bumble to introduce a similar feature for its dating app.

Jones emphasized the importance of healthy conversations among users and hinted at providing more support in this area. Bumble may expand its AI approach further in the future, potentially introducing AI “dating concierges” or assistants that go on dates on behalf of users.

In terms of safety features, Bumble has been using AI for a few years. The “Deception Detector” tool identifies and removes fake profiles, spammers, and scammers, while the “Private Detector” feature automatically blurs nude photos. Recently, Bumble introduced an option for members to report profiles if they suspect the use of AI-generated photos and videos.

Bumble is currently focused on enhancing the free user experience and has put a hold on launching new paid features. This includes expanding features like “Opening Moves,” adding more interest filters and customizations for the chat timer, and improving the matching algorithm. Bumble also has plans for Geneva, a community platform it recently acquired, which is set to relaunch in late fall.

Overall, Bumble’s increased investments in AI and the introduction of new features reflect its commitment to staying relevant and meeting the evolving needs of its users. By leveraging AI, Bumble aims to enhance the profile creation process, facilitate engaging conversations, and ensure a safe and enjoyable dating experience.
