BYD Adds New Electric MPV to UK Line-up with Impressive Range and Spacious Cabin

BYD, a Chinese automotive company, has quietly introduced a new electric MPV to its UK lineup. The second-generation e6, based on the Chinese-market Song Max, aims to attract taxi drivers with its impressive range of over 250 miles and spacious cabin. While BYD has not provided many details, the launch of the e6 in the UK is expected to happen soon.

The original BYD e6 was introduced in the UK back in 2013 as the company’s first model in the country. At that time, BYD was relatively unknown, and electric vehicle (EV) technology was still in its early stages. The e6 was primarily sold to taxi firms and had a real-world range of approximately 140 miles. Despite its good performance compared to other early EVs and internal combustion engine alternatives, it was priced at £47,000, making it significantly more expensive than popular EVs like the Nissan Leaf and Vauxhall Ampera. As a result, it was discontinued in the UK after just one year.

The second-generation e6, launched in 2021, is a sleeker and more advanced model compared to its predecessor. It is already available in other right-hand-drive markets like Australia, where it is priced similarly to the MG ZS EV. This suggests that the UK pricing for the e6 could be in the low £30,000s.

In terms of size, the e6 is slightly larger than Stellantis’s small-van-based MPVs but smaller than larger models like the Volkswagen ID Buzz and Lexus LM. It is equipped with a 71.7Wh battery, which allows for a competitive range of 258 miles per charge on the WLTP test cycle. However, it has a maximum charging speed of 60kW, requiring 90 minutes to reach 80% charge on a Type 2 fast charger. The e6 features a single motor on the front axle, delivering 94bhp and enabling it to accelerate from 0-62mph in 18.0 seconds.

One of the key selling points for city-based taxi drivers is the e6’s spacious cabin, flat floor, and a generous 580-litre boot. It also comes with impressive standard features such as a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a 5-inch digital instrument display, rear parking sensors, four USB charging ports, keyless entry, and a reversing camera.

BYD’s fifth UK model, the e6, is expected to be followed by the Ocean hatchback, with other models like the Atto 2, Seagull, and Sea Lion potentially launching in Europe soon.

Overall, the introduction of the BYD e6 to the UK market signifies the company’s commitment to expanding its EV offerings and catering to the needs of taxi drivers. With its improved range, competitive pricing, and spacious cabin, the e6 has the potential to be a compelling choice for those in the taxi industry looking to switch to electric vehicles.
