“BYD Seal Gets Major Update in China: Improved Electricals and Enhanced Autonomous Driving, with a Cut in Range”

BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced significant updates to its BYD Seal model. The new version of the Seal features improvements in its electrical system, autonomous driving capabilities, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). However, it also comes with a reduction in range.

One of the major changes in the updated BYD Seal is the shift from a 400V electrical system to an 800V system. This upgrade results in a faster charging time, with the 10-80% charging time reduced from 37 minutes to 25 minutes. The increased voltage suggests that the peak charging rate has also been raised, although BYD has not confirmed the exact limit.

Additionally, the more powerful electrical system has allowed for the inclusion of uprated adaptive dampers, which improve both ride comfort and body control. This enhancement enhances the overall driving experience for Seal owners.

Another notable update is the availability of a roof-mounted lidar sensor, which significantly upgrades the car’s ADAS. The adaptive cruise control and automated parking systems have been improved, providing a higher level of safety and convenience for drivers.

In terms of battery options, the new BYD Seal offers two choices: a 61.44kWh battery and an 80.64kWh battery. However, even the larger battery option is smaller than the 82.5kWh battery currently available in the UK. As a result, the range of the Seal has been reduced from 435 miles to 404 miles according to the Chinese CLTC test cycle. This suggests that the facelifted version could have a WLTP range of around 320 miles, compared to the existing version’s 354 miles. BYD has not provided a specific reason for the decision to opt for a smaller battery pack.

Despite these changes, the powertrains remain the same, offering a choice between a single 308bhp motor on the rear axle or a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive configuration producing a combined 523bhp. This ensures that the Seal maintains its impressive performance capabilities.

Inside the car, there are several updates as well. The steering wheel design now features a flat bottom and leather upholstery, adding a touch of sophistication. The centre console’s piano-black finish has been replaced with matte grey plastic, creating a more modern look. The dashboard’s prominent air vents have also been removed in favor of a flat panel, contributing to a cleaner and more streamlined aesthetic.

The updated BYD Seal is already available in China, but there is no confirmation yet on when it will arrive in showrooms in the UK. With its improved electricals, enhanced autonomous driving capabilities, and stylish interior updates, the new Seal is set to attract electric vehicle enthusiasts looking for a combination of performance, comfort, and advanced technology.
