BYD Seal U PHEV: UK Pricing, Specs, and Availability | Autocar

BYD, the world’s largest manufacturer of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs), is expanding its presence in the UK market with the introduction of its first plug-in hybrid model, the BYD Seal U PHEV. The pricing for the UK market starts at £33,205 for the front-wheel drive Boost model, while the all-wheel drive Design models start at £39,905. The Comfort spec cars, which combine the larger battery from the Design model with the front-wheel drive powertrain, will have their prices announced later. Customers can now place their orders, and sales will commence in September.

The BYD Seal U is a larger SUV sibling to the Seal electric saloon and is already being sold in China as the BYD Song. It measures 4775mm long, 1890mm wide, and 1670mm high, making it significantly larger than the saloon. One notable feature of the Seal U is its spacious boot, which offers 552 liters of storage capacity, surpassing that of popular models like the Peugeot 3008 and Skoda Karoq.

In China, the Seal U is available with both an electric powertrain and a PHEV powertrain, and both options will be offered in the UK as well. The EV version offers a choice between a 71kWh or 87kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, providing a range of 323 to 376 miles on the Chinese CLTC test cycle. On the other hand, the PHEV combines a 106bhp 1.5-liter petrol engine, an 18.3kWh battery, a 194bhp electric motor, and a CVT transmission. This configuration allows for an electric-only range of approximately 68 miles.

Charging the PHEV’s 18.3kWh battery from 30% to 80% takes around 35 minutes, and the vehicle comes with standard vehicle-to-load charging capability. The BYD Seal U also offers a range of standard features, including 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, vegan leather upholstery, wireless phone charging, an Infinity premium sound system, and a 15.6-inch rotatable infotainment system.

The introduction of the BYD Seal U PHEV marks the next step in BYD’s expansion in Europe, following the success of its previous models like the BYD Atto 3 electric crossover and the BYD Dolphin electric hatchback, which both garnered positive attention in the UK market.

BYD’s expertise in manufacturing PHEVs and EVs is evident from its impressive sales figures. In 2022, the company sold 1.8 million PHEVs and EVs, and this number increased to over 3.0 million in 2023. With its reputation for producing high-quality electric vehicles and its commitment to sustainable transportation, BYD is well-positioned to make a significant impact in the UK market.

Overall, the BYD Seal U PHEV offers UK customers an attractive option in the plug-in hybrid SUV segment. With its spacious interior, impressive range, and advanced features, it provides a compelling choice for those looking to transition to electric or hybrid vehicles. The competitive pricing further enhances its appeal, making it an accessible option for a wide range of consumers. With BYD’s track record of success and its focus on innovation and sustainability, the BYD Seal U PHEV is poised to make a strong impression on the UK market when it arrives in September.
