BYD Unveils Outlandish Hot Hatch Concept at Beijing Motor Show

BYD, a Chinese automaker, has unveiled the Ocean-M hot hatch concept at the Beijing motor show. This concept provides a glimpse of an upcoming electric family car that BYD plans to launch later this year. While the production version of the Ocean-M may not feature the aggressive bodykit and other flashy elements seen on the concept, it does showcase the overall design direction and features that can be expected.

The Ocean-M is expected to be a direct competitor to models like the MG 4 EV, Volkswagen ID 3, Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric, and Smart #1. In terms of size, it measures around 4.3 meters long, positioning it within the compact hatchback segment. The concept showcases an aggressive front end, distinctive LED lighting, electronic pop-out door handles, and muscular wheel arches.

Although technical details are scarce, BYD has revealed that the Ocean-M is built on a new electric vehicle platform with a rear-mounted motor. It is likely to feature BYD’s trademark Blade composition batteries, which are known for their high energy density and long-lasting performance. The platform is believed to be an evolution of BYD’s existing e-Platform 3.0, which underpins models like the Atto 3 crossover, Seal saloon, and Seal U SUV.

BYD has emphasized the Ocean-M’s “performance genes” and referred to it as a “pure-electric steel cannon.” However, exact power output figures have not been disclosed. Currently, BYD’s most powerful rear-driven electric vehicle is the Seal with a 308bhp single-motor variant. If a similar motor is used in the Ocean-M, it could compete directly with models like the Volkswagen ID 3 GTX and Cupra Born VZ.

It is expected that the Ocean-M will be available in different trims, including more efficient options with lower power outputs. The Atto 3, for example, features a 201bhp motor that may be utilized in certain Ocean-M variants. The Ocean-M is set to be the sixth car introduced by BYD in the UK market, following the Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, Seal-U, and the upcoming Sea Lion crossover.

Although models like the Han saloon and Tang SUV are sold by BYD in other European markets, there are no plans to bring them to the UK. Additionally, there is no confirmation regarding the availability of BYD’s other car brands, such as Denza, Fangchengbao, and Yangwang.

In terms of pricing, BYD has announced that the Ocean-M will go on sale in China for around £22,000. However, the European pricing is expected to be significantly higher. This indicates that the Ocean-M will likely be positioned as a more premium electric hatchback in the European market.

Overall, the BYD Ocean-M concept showcases a promising electric family car with a striking design and potential for impressive performance. With its advanced electric vehicle platform and use of innovative battery technology, it has the potential to compete with established players in the compact electric hatchback segment. As BYD continues to expand its presence in the UK market, the Ocean-M could be a significant addition to their lineup.
