BYD Unveils the Shark: Its First Plug-In Hybrid Pick-Up Truck

BYD, the Chinese automaker, has announced that its first pick-up truck will be called the Shark. The truck will be unveiled at the Beijing motor show and is expected to introduce a new plug-in hybrid powertrain called DMO (dual-mode off-road), which is said to optimize off-road performance. While technical specifications for the powertrain have not been confirmed, it is expected to offer four-wheel drive and competitive performance similar to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) rivals like the Toyota Hilux.

BYD already has a plug-in hybrid powertrain called DM-i PHEV that is used in its Seal U SUV. This powertrain features a 106bhp 1.5-liter petrol engine, a 194bhp electric motor, and an 18.3kWh battery pack. However, BYD has yet to confirm whether the Shark will also be offered with a battery-electric powertrain.

Camouflaged images of the Shark reveal that it will be available in the popular double-cab bodystyle and will sport tough, slab-sided styling. It features a full-length LED light bar up front, with a wraparound lighting signature reminiscent of the Ford Ranger.

Inside the Shark, it is expected to have the same 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen as seen in other BYD electric cars, such as the Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal. This touchscreen is capable of rotating to display in either portrait or landscape orientations.

The Shark will be fully unveiled at the Beijing motor show and is expected to arrive in UK showrooms early next year. If this is indeed the case, BYD will have a head start in the electrified pick-up market in the UK, as there are currently no plug-in hybrid pick-ups available for sale. The only electric pick-up currently available in the UK is the Maxus T90EV, which is limited by its rear-driven powertrain and 220-mile range.

Overall, the introduction of the BYD Shark pick-up truck with its plug-in hybrid powertrain is a significant development in the automotive industry. It demonstrates BYD’s commitment to electrification and expands the options available for consumers who are interested in more sustainable and efficient vehicles. The tough and stylish design of the Shark, along with its advanced infotainment system, makes it a compelling choice for those in the market for a pick-up truck. BYD’s entry into the electrified pick-up market may also put pressure on other manufacturers to develop their own offerings, further driving the transition to electric vehicles.
