ClickHouse, the open-source real-time analytics database startup, has announced its acquisition of PeerDB, a company specializing in cost-effective Postgres replication and change data capture. ClickHouse has gained recognition as a real-time data warehouse for large enterprises, with clients including Deutsche Bank, eBay, Microsoft, and Spotify. While ClickHouse already offered a Postgres connector, PeerDB brings significant speed improvements and specialized capabilities.
PeerDB was founded with a focus on the quality of its products rather than quantity. Their specialized ETL tool for Postgres enables the initial load of terabytes of data from a Postgres database to a warehouse like ClickHouse. Additionally, their change data capture system ensures synchronization between the original database and the data warehouse.
The majority of PeerDB customers rely on Postgres as their main data source for their data warehouse. This aligns with the common practice of using Postgres for transactional backends in customer-facing applications and transferring that data to ClickHouse for analytics purposes. ClickHouse recognized the growing market for a tool like PeerDB, as many customers face the challenge of using Postgres for change data capture use cases, which requires deep knowledge of the technology.
In the future, the PeerDB team plans to enable change data capture for additional data sources. Existing commercial customers will have access to the PeerDB Cloud service until July 24, 2025. The open-source components of PeerDB will remain open source, and ClickHouse will open source the production-grade Helm charts for PeerDB’s enterprise offering.
While the financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed, PeerDB previously closed a $3.6 million seed funding round in late 2023, with 8VC leading the round. ClickHouse believes that the acquisition is a fair price that recognizes the work done by the PeerDB team and provides a great opportunity for ClickHouse’s growth potential.
