Converting Lamp Posts into EV Chargers: Voltpost’s Innovative Solution

EV Charging Solutions for Urban Dwellers

Driving an electric vehicle (EV) can be a game-changer for single-family homeowners who have access to a garage or driveway. They wake up every morning with a fully charged car, ready to take them wherever they need to go. However, for those living in big cities without these amenities, EV life can be more challenging. Relying on public fast chargers or stringing cables from homes to the curb poses safety hazards and offers only temporary solutions.

Fortunately, there may be a better option: the humble lamppost. Lampposts are ubiquitous in cities and already have the necessary wiring to enable curbside charging. Voltpost, a New York City startup, has been working on a product that retrofits existing street lampposts for EV charging. After a year of design and development, it has introduced the Voltpost lamppost charger.

The device, which resembles a shroud covering the lower part of the pole, contains all the electronics and cables required for AC Level 2 charging for two to four EVs. Although not fast charging, it provides enough power for most people to top off their vehicles overnight. The charger docks at hand-level on the lamppost shroud, with a retractable cable anchored eight feet above the ground for easy use. The modular design allows for convenient repairs and upgrades, while charge station managers can control pricing and remotely monitor the devices through custom software.

To streamline the charging experience, Voltpost provides an app that oversees charging sessions and facilitates payments. Drivers can also use the app to reserve chargers, avoiding conflicts with other EV owners. This feature adds a unique twist to traditional “dibs” or “savesies” and ensures convenience for drivers, although it may cause some friction among neighbors.

Voltpost’s chargers boast quick installation times, taking only an hour to complete the process in a test with the New York City Department of Transportation. The startup has ongoing projects in New York, Chicago, and Detroit, showcasing its commitment to expanding access to convenient EV charging in urban areas. In July, Voltpost raised a significant $3.6 million seed round to further fuel its growth and development.

By repurposing existing infrastructure such as lampposts, Voltpost offers a viable solution for EV owners in dense urban environments. These chargers not only enhance convenience but also address safety concerns associated with makeshift charging setups. With the increasing demand for sustainable transportation options, innovative initiatives like Voltpost’s lamppost chargers contribute to a greener future while catering to the unique needs of urban dwellers.
