Cruise Cuts 35 Employees in Routine Role Eliminations, VW Group Invests $1B in Rivian: TechCrunch Mobility

TechCrunch Mobility is back with another exciting edition of the latest transportation news. This week has been particularly eventful, with numerous developments in the industry. Let’s dive right in!

Cruise, the autonomous vehicle company, recently made some cuts to its workforce. However, these were described as routine role eliminations rather than layoffs for financial reasons. Cruise has also announced a reorganization to enhance its safety functions. These moves reflect the company’s ongoing commitment to safety and efficiency.

In surprising news, Rivian and the Volkswagen Group have entered into a partnership. The deal will give VW access to Rivian’s electrical architecture and software platform, while Rivian will receive financial support and manufacturing expertise from VW. This agreement could bring $5 billion to Rivian and strengthen both companies’ positions in the EV market.

Other notable deals include Aether Fuels raising $30.4 million for producing aviation and maritime fuel, Bitsensing securing $25 million for its 4D imaging radar technology, Fetcherr receiving $90 million in funding for its dynamic pricing systems, and Getir undergoing a restructuring with a $250 million investment from Abu Dhabi’s wealth fund.

In the autonomous vehicle space, Cruise has agreed to pay a fine for failing to provide full information about an accident involving one of its robotaxis. Additionally, Cruise has appointed Marc Whitten, a video game veteran, as its CEO. Project 3 Mobility, a Croatian autonomous vehicle startup, has rebranded as Verne and unveiled plans to launch an electric autonomous two-seater vehicle by 2026. Uber Freight and Aurora Innovation have also announced a collaboration to integrate autonomous driving technology into the Uber Freight network.

Waymo has removed the waitlist for its San Francisco robotaxi service, allowing anyone to download the app and hail a ride immediately. This move comes after nearly 300,000 people signed up for the waitlist.

In the electric vehicle sector, Fisker’s bankruptcy proceedings have revealed potential financial distress dating back to last August. The company is currently facing a legal battle over its assets. CDK, a software provider for car dealerships and auto shops, is dealing with cyberattacks that are causing disruptions for its customers.

In other news, Berta Rodriguez-Hervas, Stellantis’ AI chief, has left the company. Finally, the Bugatti Tourbillon, the successor to the Bugatti Chiron, has been unveiled. This luxury vehicle showcases a unique interior design with a stunning instrument cluster created in collaboration with Swiss watchmakers. The Tourbillon also features a new drivetrain that combines a naturally aspirated V16 engine with an electric powertrain.

That’s all for this week’s edition of TechCrunch Mobility. Stay tuned for more updates and exciting news in the world of transportation!
