“Cupra Unveils Terramar SUV: The Brand’s Final Combustion-Engined Model”

Cupra, the performance division of Spanish automaker Seat, has unveiled its latest model, the Terramar SUV. This new vehicle, which is expected to be the brand’s final combustion-engined model, is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform. Priced below £40,000, the Terramar enters the highly competitive C-SUV segment, where it will face off against rivals such as the BMW X1, Kia Sportage, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

The Terramar will be offered with five different engines, all paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The range includes a 148bhp mild-hybrid four-cylinder engine, two performance-focused flagships with a turbocharged non-hybrid four-cylinder engine producing 262bhp, and a plug-in hybrid variant with 268bhp. The plug-in hybrid version comes with a 19.7kWh battery, offering an electric-only range of over 70 miles. It can charge at rates of up to 50kW on DC power and 11kW on AC. However, it is worth noting that the PHEV model weighs 1.9 tonnes, compared to 1.6 tonnes for the pure-petrol models.

According to Cupra, the Terramar has been specifically tuned to provide greater driver engagement compared to other MQB Evo-based cars like the Skoda Kodiaq. It features a reduced ride height of 10mm and modified front suspension geometry for additional camber. The range-topping VZ-badged variants also come with a special Cupra drive mode and the option to disable the electronic stability control.

Inside, the Terramar boasts a driver-oriented design that offers a cocooning driving position. The cabin features a mix of high-quality materials and finishes, and it comes equipped with a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, both running on a new operating system.

Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths sees the Terramar as the next step in the brand’s growth journey. This year, Cupra has already renewed its lineup with the launch of the Tavascan, an electric coupé-bodied model, and major facelifts for the Leon and Formentor. The brand has committed to transitioning to offering only electric vehicles by 2030, making the Terramar likely its final internal combustion engine model.

Deliveries of the Cupra Terramar are set to begin early next year. With its aggressive styling, performance-focused engines, and driver-focused enhancements, the Terramar is poised to make a strong impression in the competitive C-SUV segment. As Cupra continues to expand its lineup and transition to electric vehicles, the Terramar represents a significant milestone in the brand’s journey towards a greener future.
