Designing the Jeep Wagoneer S: Insights from Stellantis Chief Design Officer Ralph Gilles

The development of the electric SUV’s design for the Jeep Wagoneer S involved several interesting factors and decisions. Stellantis Chief Design Officer Ralph Gilles shared valuable insights during the reveal, shedding light on the thought process behind the design choices.

One of the main questions asked was why the Wagoneer S was chosen as the lead for an electric Jeep, considering that the Recon model might have seemed like a more obvious choice. Gilles explained that a significant range was a crucial factor in the decision-making process. With a target of 300 miles on a single charge, it made sense to create a vehicle that was lower and more aerodynamic. This design approach would help maximize efficiency and range.

Interestingly, the design work for the Wagoneer S started approximately four years ago. During the main presentation, Gilles emphasized that the design team for this project primarily consisted of Millennial and Gen Z designers. The lead sketch guiding the project was even created by a talented 29-year-old. This younger generation of designers brought a fresh perspective to the table, collaborating closely and without any preconceived notions or constraints regarding what a Jeep should look like.

Gilles expressed his pride in the maturity of the design, noting that it didn’t overtly scream “electric vehicle.” The young design team’s input was also crucial in the selection of materials. They moved away from traditional luxury options, such as wood, in favor of various metal trimmings like aluminum and zinc. The decision to exclude chrome was also made due to environmental concerns and a desire to embrace a more modern aesthetic.

Another exciting aspect highlighted by Gilles was the absence of piano black plastic in the Wagoneer S’s interior. Customer feedback regarding fingerprints and scratches drove this decision. Instead, ceramic-coated and textured aluminum were used in areas where piano black plastic would typically be found. Jeep even provides new Wagoneer owners with microfiber cleaning cloths to help maintain the cleanliness of these panels.

Aerodynamics played a vital role in achieving the Wagoneer S’s 300-mile range target. To optimize aerodynamic performance, the vehicle features an “R-Wing” that conceals its sloping fastback design. Initially, the wing was primarily for stylistic purposes, allowing for a more traditional SUV look with fastback aerodynamics. However, as development progressed, the aero team found ways to enhance its functionality.

Designing an electric vehicle presented both exciting and challenging aspects. Gilles mentioned one particular challenge: reestablishing the iconic Jeep grille without the need for cooling. This provided a newfound freedom but also required creative thinking. In the case of the Wagoneer S, the grille is solid, but lights placed above the grille slots reflect light back out. Gilles explained that an option similar to the Charger’s “R-Wing” grille design wasn’t suitable for the Wagoneer S because maintaining a usable frunk (front trunk) was crucial for a utility vehicle.

Additionally, Gilles shared some insights into the Trailhawk concept for the Wagoneer S. He revealed that it was a relatively recent development. Originally, the Wagoneer S was designed as a high-range luxury model, while the Recon was intended to handle off-road capability in a Wrangler-style manner. However, Jeep couldn’t resist exploring a Trailhawk version. Gilles noted that Trailhawk versions are popular across Jeep’s lineup, so it made sense to consider bringing that rugged capability to the Wagoneer S.
