Discover Local Businesses with Yelp Assistant’s AI-Powered Features

Yelp is revolutionizing its platform by incorporating more AI features, including the introduction of an AI assistant and the implementation of TikTok-style videos to provide users with comprehensive information about businesses. These new tools add to Yelp’s existing collection of generative AI features, such as AI-powered summaries for restaurants and attractions, which were launched earlier this year.

By leveraging large language models (LLMs), Yelp is able to analyze and summarize vast amounts of data, making it easier to process the multitude of reviews found on business pages. This technology enables Yelp to transform the way people discover and connect with local businesses, according to Craig Saldanha, Yelp’s chief product officer.

The AI assistant takes the process of discovering and connecting with local businesses to the next level. Users can engage in a conversational chat experience to find the right professionals in various categories, including home services, automotive, beauty, pet care, real estate, professional services, event planning, and financial services. The Yelp Assistant will ask follow-up questions to understand the user’s specific project or problem and then provide relevant businesses. It goes even further by offering to draft and submit a detailed request on the user’s behalf, including inquiries about pricing and availability. While it initially seemed that the assistant only surfaced sponsored businesses, Yelp clarified that project submissions are sent to both advertisers and non-advertisers based on business relevance and eligibility.

To enhance the user experience, Yelp is also introducing video summaries of businesses. These videos will utilize AI technology to combine videos, photos, and AI voiceover to share information and insights from user reviews. The format will resemble popular social media platforms like TikTok and Reels. Although the demo may give off a vibe of local ads with a limited budget, the visually inclined users will likely appreciate this change from the text-heavy site.

Yelp Assistant can currently be accessed through the “Projects” tab on iOS devices, with availability on Android slated for later this summer. Additionally, Yelp plans to begin testing the video summary feature soon.

Overall, Yelp’s integration of AI features demonstrates its commitment to enhancing user experience and providing valuable information about local businesses. By utilizing AI algorithms to analyze and summarize reviews, users can make more informed decisions when choosing professionals or exploring new places. The addition of video summaries adds a visually engaging element to the platform, catering to the preferences of modern internet users. With these advancements, Yelp is solidifying its position as a premier platform for discovering and connecting with local businesses.
