“Dongfeng’s Nammi Box: China’s Budget EV Enters Europe, Challenging Citroen ë-C3”

Dongfeng, one of China’s leading car manufacturers, is making its entry into the European market with the launch of the Nammi Box budget electric vehicle (EV). Priced at CHF 21,990 (£19,615), the Nammi Box is positioned as a direct competitor to the Citroen ë-C3, which is currently one of the most affordable EVs in Europe. In order to keep the price down, Dongfeng is considering producing the Nammi Box at its proposed factory in Italy.

The Chinese carmaker is currently in advanced talks with the Italian government regarding the creation of the plant. This move would allow Dongfeng to avoid the high import taxes imposed by the EU on Chinese-made EVs, which can reach up to 38.1% in addition to the existing 10% import tariff. By producing the Nammi Box in Europe, Dongfeng can offer a more competitive price to consumers.

The Nammi Box is based on Dongfeng’s own S3 platform and shares a similar size with the ë-C3, measuring 4.02m in length. It is equipped with a 42.3kWh battery and has a claimed range of 193 miles according to the WLTP test cycle. The power comes from a 94bhp single motor. While a smaller 31.5kWh battery is available in China, it is not expected to be offered in the European market. In comparison, the ë-C3 offers a range of 199 miles with a 44kWh battery and a 111bhp motor.

Inside, the Nammi Box features a diamond-stitched white leather upholstery and a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen as the centerpiece of the dashboard. It also includes a 5-inch digital instrument panel. One unique design feature is the ability of the front seats to recline flat, allowing them to be used as makeshift beds.

While there is no information available yet regarding a wider release of the Nammi Box, Dongfeng’s reported push into Italy suggests that the company may follow in the footsteps of other Chinese car manufacturers, such as BYD, Chery, Geely, GWM, and SAIC, who have successfully entered the European market.

Dongfeng’s entry into Europe with the Nammi Box demonstrates the growing presence and competitiveness of Chinese car manufacturers in the global EV market. By establishing a factory in Italy, Dongfeng can overcome the import taxes and offer a more affordable EV to European consumers. The Nammi Box’s similar size and comparable range to the ë-C3 make it a compelling alternative for budget-conscious buyers. With its unique design features and competitive pricing, the Nammi Box has the potential to make a significant impact in the European EV market.
