DS Unveils Futuristic Concept Car, Paying Tribute to the Legendary Citroën SM

DS Unveils Futuristic Concept Car Inspired by the Citroën SM

DS, the premium brand spun off from Citroën, has unveiled a futuristic concept car that pays homage to the iconic Citroën SM. The new SM Tribute concept, designed to mark 10 years since DS became an independent brand, reimagines what the original SM could have become if it had continued to evolve over the past five decades.

The original Citroën SM, introduced in the 1970s, was known for its technical innovation and luxurious features. It boasted swiveling headlights, variable assist power steering, rain-sensitive wipers, and inboard front brakes. It was also lauded for its exceptional comfort, aerodynamics, and speed.

In line with the spirit of the original, the new SM concept is a low-slung coupe with a long, sleek hood and a sharply angled front end. The concept closely matches the size of its predecessor, but sits 35mm closer to the ground for improved efficiency.

The design of the concept car pays tribute to the original SM in several ways. It features wind-cheating rear wheel spats, a 1970s-style Gold Leaf paint job, and a wraparound cover for the headlights and number plate, which now serves as a 3D screen light bar.

Thierry Métroz, DS design boss, emphasized the brand’s commitment to preserving the original design while incorporating details about DS’s current and future models. Although DS hasn’t specified which features will make it to production, potential candidates include the distinctive three-spoke light signatures, aero-optimized rear-view cameras, and a large air-channeling bonnet vent.

Inside the concept car, DS has created a cockpit that pays homage to the original SM while hinting at the future. The dashboard resembles that of the old car, complete with retro instrument clusters. The seats feature horizontally striped cushions, reminiscent of the 1970s. However, the concept also incorporates modern technology, such as a projection display for the infotainment system, a curved gauge cluster, and a steer-by-wire steering wheel.

While DS hasn’t provided any technical details about the concept, it is likely that any production versions will be electric. DS is set to launch two mid-sized premium cars next year: an SUV based on the Aero Sport Lounge concept and a high-riding saloon to replace the current DS 9. Both models will ride on Stellantis’s new STLA Medium architecture, which can accommodate plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.

The SM Tribute concept showcases DS’s commitment to blending heritage with innovation and pushing the boundaries of automotive design. By reimagining the iconic Citroën SM, DS demonstrates its ability to create futuristic and technologically advanced vehicles that capture the imagination of car enthusiasts and reflect the brand’s vision for the future of premium mobility.
