“Electrogenic Unveils ‘Plug-and-Play’ Electric Conversion Kit for DeLorean DMC-12”

Electrogenic, an Oxfordshire-based firm known for its electric conversions of classic cars, has unveiled its latest project: a plug-and-play conversion package for the iconic DeLorean DMC-12. The DeLorean, made famous by its appearance in the Back to the Future films, is notorious for its underwhelming V6 engine. However, Electrogenic’s conversion kit promises to transform the DMC-12 into a true sports car, with improved power and performance.

The conversion kit is designed to be fully reversible, preserving the original structure of the car. It includes a 43kWh battery that replaces the rear-mounted fuel tank and an electric motor integrated into the rear axle. The motor delivers 215bhp and 229lb ft of torque, resulting in a 0-62mph time of just 5.0 seconds, twice as quick as the original car.

One notable feature of this Electrogenic model is the inclusion of launch control, enhancing its performance capabilities even further. The conversion can be fitted to both manual and automatic DMC-12s and adds just 40kg to the weight of the car.

Steve Drummond, the CEO of Electrogenic, expressed his excitement about the project, stating that the DMC-12 is “the perfect candidate for conversion to electric drive.” He emphasized that the conversion package was developed entirely in-house, using Electrogenic’s proprietary technology, to give the car the sporting performance its futuristic design always deserved.

The battery included in the conversion kit provides the DMC-12 with a range of 150 miles. It can be charged using regenerative brakes that adjust according to driving modes: Eco and Sport. The battery can be fully charged on a CCS rapid charger in under an hour, although specific charging speeds have not been provided.

In addition to the performance upgrades, customers can also choose to include modern features in their DMC-12 electromods, such as Apple CarPlay, an upgraded air conditioning system, and a bespoke virtual dashboard with displays for driving modes, battery usage, and charge status.

While the cost of the conversion varies depending on the condition of the donor car and installation rates, Electrogenic estimates that it will range between £65,000 and £85,000, excluding local taxes.

Overall, Electrogenic’s plug-and-play conversion package for the DeLorean DMC-12 offers enthusiasts the opportunity to transform this iconic 1980s car into a high-performance electric sports car. With its improved power, faster acceleration, and modern features, the conversion kit brings the DMC-12 into the 21st century while preserving its iconic design.
