Embracer Group Announces Sale of Saber, Developer of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake, for $500 Million

Embracer Group, a Swedish conglomerate, has announced the sale of Saber Interactive, one of its largest subsidiaries, in a deal worth up to $500 million. This move will make Saber privately-owned and independent, with around 3,500 employees. The sale comes as part of Embracer Group’s ongoing reorganization and cost-cutting efforts following a series of mergers and acquisitions.

One of the notable projects currently in development at Saber is a remake of the popular game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Originally released by BioWare in 2003, the roleplaying game set in the Star Wars universe has garnered a dedicated fan base. Embracer initially announced the remake in 2021, with its subsidiary Aspyr Media as the developer in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment. However, the project was delayed and subsequently shifted to Saber in 2022.

Saber, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is known for its titles such as World War Z and Snowrunner. The studio has several games set to release this year, including Space Marine 2 and Jurassic Park Survival. The sale to private investors will provide Saber with newfound independence and potential growth opportunities.

Embracer Group acquired Saber Interactive in 2020 for $525 million. As part of the acquisition, Embracer merged several other studios, including Demiurge Studios and New World Interactive, into Saber. However, as Embracer seeks to reduce costs, this deal allows the company to alleviate some of its debt burden. The specifics of which subsidiaries are included in the sale have not been disclosed.

The gaming industry is constantly evolving, and Embracer Group’s decision to sell Saber Interactive reflects the need for adaptability and resilience. This move allows Saber to chart its own course and pursue new opportunities while providing Embracer with financial relief.
