Beijing Motor Show 2024: Exciting Unveilings and Chinese Innovations
The Beijing motor show has returned after a hiatus since 2019, bringing with it a plethora of exciting car unveilings from both well-established brands and emerging challengers. Here are some of the highlights from the show:
Arcfox Alpha S5: Chinese electric car manufacturer Arcfox has revealed its latest saloon, the Alpha S5. The car is based on an 800V electrical architecture and boasts a combined 523bhp and 509lb ft of torque from its two motors. It can go from 0-62mph in just 3.7 seconds and has a claimed range of 419 miles on a single charge.
Audi Q6 L E-tron: Audi’s China-specific variant of its new electric SUV, the Q6 L E-tron, made its debut at the show. The car features a stretched wheelbase to accommodate the Chinese market’s demand for ample legroom. It can travel up to 435 miles on a single charge.
Avatr 12: Chinese EV manufacturer Avatr showcased its second production model, the Avatr 12. The electric saloon is expected to make its global debut soon and is based on the company’s EP1 EV platform. With a partnership between Avatr, mobile phone company Huawei, and battery manufacturer CATL, the Avatr 12 promises cutting-edge technology and performance.
BYD Shark: BYD, one of the world’s largest car makers, introduced its first plug-in hybrid pick-up truck, the BYD Shark. The mid-sized truck is designed to rival popular models like the Toyota Hilux and features an off-road-focused powertrain. BYD has already gained attention for its electric vehicles, and the Shark aims to expand its presence in the light commercial vehicle market.
Denza Z9 GT: The flagship model for BYD’s joint venture with Mercedes-Benz, the Denza Z9 GT, was revealed in Chinese patent filings. The electric saloon boasts a tri-motor powertrain that delivers up to 952bhp, positioning it as a direct competitor to the Porsche Taycan Turbo S.
GWM Ora 07: Ora, a subsidiary of GWM, showcased its second UK model, the Ora 07. The electric crossover features a swooping, retro-inspired design reminiscent of the Porsche Panamera. In China, where it is sold as the Lighting Cat, it offers an 83kWh battery that provides a range of 373 miles.
Honda Ye GT Concept: Honda introduced its new model line, Ye, in partnership with Chinese joint-venture partners Dongfeng and GAC. The flagship model, the Ye GT Concept, is a sharp-edged, low-slung saloon aimed at driver engagement. A production version is set to hit the Chinese market next year.
Lamborghini Urus SE: Lamborghini unveiled the electrified version of its popular SUV, the Urus SE. The plug-in hybrid powertrain delivers a muscular 789bhp and an electric-only range of 37 miles. The Urus SE combines power and efficiency in a bold and brash package.
