Ferrari Takes a Step Towards EV Production with New E-Building Facility

Ferrari, the renowned Italian supercar manufacturer, has made a significant move towards the launch of its first electric vehicle (EV) by opening a new production facility at its factory in Maranello. The new 42,500 square meter E-building is designed to enhance production flexibility for Ferrari, accommodating the production of combustion-engined and hybrid models, as well as their first EV. Although the ‘E’ in the building’s name does not stand for electric, Ferrari states that it represents “energy, evolution, and environment.”

Production at the new facility is set to begin in January 2025, with the Purosangue and SF90 expected to be the first models produced on the state-of-the-art line. This move aligns with Ferrari’s strategy of prioritizing revenue quality over quantity by housing the production and development of all powertrain types in a single building. The E-building will also assemble high-voltage batteries, electric motors, and axles, which are considered strategic electric components crucial for differentiating Ferrari’s technology and performance.

While Ferrari has confirmed its plans for an EV, specific technical details have yet to be disclosed. Early patents suggest that the EV could be a four-wheel-drive two-seater, and a recent report by Reuters hints at a starting price of €500,000. CEO Benedetto Vigna emphasizes the advantages of building a new factory for the upcoming EV, stating that it allows Ferrari to design, engineer, and handcraft the required technologies, components, and processes in-house. By mastering the full system, Ferrari aims to maintain its competitive advantage and ensure that their EV delivers the distinctive driving thrills associated with the brand.

A notable aspect of Ferrari’s strategy is their decision to produce batteries and motors in-house, demonstrating their desire for maximum control over future products. The E-building will employ over 300 staff members, and training for the new production lines began over two years ago, strengthening the knowledge required for motor production and battery assembly. Although Ferrari retains a greater level of manual assembly compared to mainstream car factories, the E-building will utilize collaborative robots to assist with production.

The construction of the E-building took two years and was built on a site to the north of the existing campus without increasing Ferrari’s overall footprint. The facility includes four levels dedicated to general systems, vehicle assembly and logistics, and vehicle assembly, engines, and components. It also features a mezzanine with office space. Ferrari emphasizes that the E-building has been built to the highest levels of energy performance, incorporating over 3,000 roof-mounted solar panels capable of generating a peak power output of 1.3MW. The facility will be powered entirely by renewable energy. In addition, the E-building will collect rainwater for treatment and reuse, and over 60% of the energy used for battery and motor testing will be recovered using accumulators. The road infrastructure around the new building has also been redeveloped to improve traffic flow and provide better access.

Overall, Ferrari’s investment in the new E-building facility showcases their commitment to EV production and their determination to maintain control over the development and manufacturing processes.
