Fire Damages Electric Vehicles at Rivian Automotive Manufacturing Facility in Illinois
Late on Saturday, a fire erupted at a parking lot located in Rivian Automotive’s manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, causing damage to several of the company’s electric vehicles. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
Situated on the north side of the four-million-square-foot factory, approximately 130 miles south of Chicago, the fire did not affect the assembly plant itself, as confirmed by the Normal Fire Department in a statement to Reuters. However, Rivian has yet to disclose the exact number and type of vehicles impacted by the incident.
Rivian is widely recognized for its R1S SUVs and R1T pickups, which have gained significant attention in the electric vehicle market. To further advance their success, the company has been expanding its Normal plant to accommodate the production of their smaller and more affordable R2 SUVs, set to launch in 2026. The introduction of these models is seen as crucial for Rivian’s growth and market presence.
Notably, Rivian recently halted production at the Normal facility for three weeks to undergo significant retooling aimed at simplifying the manufacturing process and reducing costs. It’s worth mentioning that Rivian exclusively manufactures all its vehicles at the Normal factory, with plans to establish a second assembly plant in Georgia. In other news, Rivian temporarily paused the production of its commercial delivery vans utilized by retail giant Amazon.com due to a shortage of parts. However, the company anticipates recovering all missed production and meeting their commitments to Amazon.com in due course.
