“Ford Focus ST: A Thrilling Farewell to a Hot Hatch Icon”

The Ford Focus ST has been a beloved hot hatch since its introduction in 1998. Now in its fourth generation, the Focus ST continues to impress with its performance and dynamic capabilities. However, with the Ford Focus set to go out of production in 2025, the Focus ST is making its final run with the introduction of the special ST Edition.

The Focus ST comes in two variants: the regular ST and the special ST Edition. Both are powered by a 2.3-liter petrol engine producing 276bhp. Unfortunately, the diesel ST is no longer available. The ST Edition, in particular, has received some exciting upgrades. It features 363mm Brembo brakes, adjustable coilover suspension from KW Automotive, and a limited-slip differential for the hatchback model. The Edition also sits lower, thanks to new 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside the cabin, the Focus ST offers Ford’s latest Sync4 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless smartphone mirroring and charging, premium audio by Bang & Olufsen, and adaptive LED headlights. The Edition boasts new front sports seats that provide an ideal driving position and have been accredited by Germany’s Campaign for Healthier Backs. The boot size is practical, with 375 liters for the hatchback and 575 liters for the estate.

Under the hood, the Focus ST is powered by Ford’s 2.3-liter Ecoboost engine, delivering 276bhp and a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds. The ST Edition retains the same power output. With 310lb ft of torque, the ST Edition offers a thrilling driving experience, especially when paired with the slick six-speed manual gearbox. However, power starts to wane beyond 5000rpm. While an automatic option is available, it doesn’t provide the same level of engagement as the manual.

When it comes to ride and handling, the Focus ST truly excels. Its chassis is excellent, offering direct and accurate steering, tenacious handling, and impressive body control at speed. The Edition provides even more tenacity, inspiring confidence in corners. However, the ride quality can be a bit lumpy, and road noise is noticeable. Despite these compromises, the Focus ST remains one of the most enjoyable hot hatches in its class.

In terms of running costs, the basic Focus ST starts at £37,705, while the Edition comes in at £42,905. The ST achieved a day-to-day economy rating of 35.3mpg, although fuel consumption will increase with spirited driving. The Edition offers premium equipment, including a premium audio system, reversing camera, wireless phone charging, and Ford’s up-to-date infotainment system.

Overall, the Ford Focus ST continues to impress with its performance, handling, and overall driving experience. The addition of the ST Edition further enhances its appeal. However, with the Focus’s days numbered, it’s essential to appreciate this hot hatch while it’s still available. The Focus ST remains a true benchmark among its competitors, offering a perfect balance of performance and entertainment value.
