Ford Sales Surge in August: Trucks and Hybrids Drive Growth

Ford (F) reported a significant increase in sales for the month of August, driven by a strong summer car-buying season and a boost in its truck offerings. The automaker sold 182,985 vehicles in the U.S., a 13% jump compared to the previous year. This growth in sales positioned Ford as the top-selling brand in the U.S. for two consecutive months.

Truck sales were a highlight for Ford, with a 12% increase in August, totaling 103,011 units. This marks the first time this year that F-series truck sales surpassed 70,000 units. The launch of the all-new 2024 Ford F-150 pickup contributed to this surge in sales, after the automaker experienced a slower start to the year.

In addition to strong truck sales, Ford also experienced a significant increase in hybrid vehicle sales. The company reported a 50% jump in hybrid sales compared to the previous year, selling a total of 16,394 vehicles. This growth can be attributed to the popularity of the Ford Maverick and Ford F-150 hybrid pickups, which accounted for 12,000 of the total hybrid sales.

Ford’s focus on hybrids comes as the company undergoes a strategy shift in its approach to electric vehicles (EVs). While Ford canceled the release of a large, three-row electric SUV, the automaker saw success in its current EV lineup. In August, EV sales rose by 29%, with the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning EV pickup leading the way.

The success of Ford’s luxury division, Lincoln, also contributed to the overall sales growth. Lincoln experienced a 49% increase in sales, selling 9,841 vehicles in August. The new Nautilus SUV played a significant role in this growth, with a 57% increase in sales, making it the best August for the nameplate in 17 years. Additionally, the all-new Lincoln Navigator full-size SUV gained attention at the Pebble Beach event.

Despite delaying the launch of some EV products and capital expenditures, Ford’s current EV lineup continues to perform well. The strong sales across its various vehicle segments demonstrate the automaker’s ability to adapt to market demand and capitalize on the popularity of trucks and hybrids.
