Ford’s Shipping Strategy

Ford announced on Thursday that it will finally begin shipping its redesigned F-150 and Ranger pickup trucks to North American dealers. This decision comes after the automaker held back these vehicles in order to address potential quality issues. Additionally, Ford plans to restart shipments of the F-150 Lightning electric trucks this month, which were put on hold in February. In an effort to boost sales, Ford recently reduced the prices of certain Lightning variants by up to $5,500.

Importance for Ford’s Profit Target

The release of these large F-150s and midsize Ranger trucks is crucial for Ford to achieve its pre-tax profit target of $10 billion to $12 billion by 2024, as the F-150 is the company’s best-selling model. Ford reaffirmed this profit target just last month. However, the delay in shipping the trucks to dealerships could potentially impact Ford’s first-quarter numbers, which are due on April 24. Ford’s Chief Financial Officer, John Lawler, revealed last month that the company had 60,000 F-150s in stock that were expected to be shipped this quarter.

Learning from Past Mistakes

Ford’s cautious approach to vehicle launches began last year at its Kentucky Truck complex, where Super Duty pickups and Navigator large SUVs are manufactured. The automaker experienced substantial costs in 2023, paying nearly $4.8 billion to cover warranty repairs, as stated in its annual report. This prompted Ford to take a closer look at its processes and identify areas for improvement.

Addressing Quality Concerns

During the analysis of the redesigned F-150s held in stock, Ford engineers discovered certain electronic components that did not shut off properly or were using more power than anticipated. To rectify this issue, engineers promptly updated the problematic software before any of the trucks left the plant. This proactive approach demonstrates Ford’s commitment to delivering high-quality vehicles to its customers.

Market Response

Despite the delay in shipping the trucks, Ford’s shares saw a modest increase of 8 cents, or less than 1%, in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange. This positive market response suggests that investors have confidence in Ford’s ability to address the quality concerns and maintain profitability.
