Williams Racing has made an exciting driver change for the remainder of the Formula One season, announcing that Argentine driver Franco Colapinto will replace Logan Sargeant. Colapinto, a member of the Williams academy, will make his debut at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.
At only 21 years old, Colapinto is set to become the first Argentine driver in Formula One in 23 years. He follows in the footsteps of Carlos Reutemann as the second Argentine driver to compete for Williams.
Williams Racing expressed their confidence in Colapinto, stating that he will race for the team for the remainder of the 2024 FIA Formula 1 World Championship season. He will be racing alongside Alex Albon, using the race number 43.
This driver change comes as Williams Racing currently sits ninth out of the ten teams, with only four points earned from 15 races, all contributed by Alex Albon. However, the team believes that this move will provide them with the best opportunity to compete for points for the remainder of the season.
Team Principal James Vowles emphasized the importance of maximizing every points-scoring opportunity in the highly competitive midfield battle. With a recent car upgrade, Williams Racing is determined to make the most of their potential in the races ahead.
Although this decision was undoubtedly tough on Logan Sargeant, who had been with Williams Racing throughout the season, the team expressed their gratitude for his hard work and positive attitude.
The addition of Franco Colapinto brings fresh talent and opportunity to Williams Racing. As the team strives to climb up the rankings, Formula One fans can expect an exciting and competitive remainder of the season.
