Google Expands Real-Money Gaming Support on Play Store: New Opportunities for Developers

Google is making significant changes to its Real-Money Gaming (RMG) policies, aiming to provide more business opportunities for developers and more options for users. The company plans to support a wider range of gaming apps on its Play Store starting in 2024, specifically in countries where there is no existing licensing framework for real-money gaming.

This expansion of Google’s policies comes after successful trials conducted in India and Mexico in 2022, where daily fantasy sports and rummy apps were allowed. Based on the positive results of these trials, Google will extend its new policies to India, Mexico, and Brazil in June 2024, with plans for further implementation in other countries in the future.

Previously, Google only allowed RMG apps that had regulatory frameworks established by governments. However, under the new plan, Google Play will now welcome new types of RMG games and operators as long as they are legal and adhere to existing local guidelines and Google’s policies.

The types of games that will now be supported include online casino games, sports betting, horse racing (where separately regulated and licensed), lotteries, and daily fantasy sports. This allows developers to create a wider variety of gaming apps and opens up new business opportunities globally.

Karan Gambhir, Google’s director of global trust and security partnerships, expressed his satisfaction with the new approach, stating that it provides new business opportunities for developers while prioritizing user security. This move addresses the longstanding pressure from developers, especially overseas, to allow more types of real-money games. It also gives developers the chance to create innovative and diverse games.

Google is also considering possible amendments to its service fee model for subscriptions and in-app purchases. While the specific changes have not been revealed yet, this could have a significant impact on developers’ income and business models.

While this new plan offers benefits to developers, there are also challenges they need to consider. Adhering to local guidelines and Google’s policies can be a complex task, requiring careful attention. Additionally, potential changes to the service fee model may affect developers’ revenues.

Google has emphasized its commitment to user security and regulatory compliance. The company will ensure that all new RMG apps on its platform follow regulatory guidelines and prioritize user safety. Measures such as age verification, monitoring financial transactions, and protecting user data are already in place to maintain a high level of security.

Overall, Google’s announcement of expanded support for RMG apps brings new opportunities for developers and more options for users. While it presents challenges in terms of compliance and service fees, it demonstrates Google’s commitment to innovation, user security, and the growth of the gaming industry.
