Google News Outage Impacts Millions of Users Globally

Reports of Google News Outage Emerge

Google News, the popular news aggregator, is currently experiencing an inexplicable outage, leaving millions of users worldwide unable to access the site. According to DownDetector, the outage is affecting Google News on its desktop page, as well as its iOS and Android apps. While some users have reported that even Google Search is affected, I have not been able to replicate this issue myself.

The problem started today, May 31, at 7:59 ET/12:59 pm BST, and Google has not yet provided an official statement regarding the cause of the outage. Users across various regions, including the United States (particularly Ohio and Florida) and the United Kingdom (from London to Manchester), have reported experiencing issues. Additionally, users in India, Canada, and continental Europe are also facing problems.

Not only is Google News affected, but Google Discover, another feature of the search engine, is also experiencing issues. Users have noticed that cached older information is being resurfaced on Google Discover. Unfortunately, there is no information about when this issue will be resolved. Considering the widespread use of Google’s news service, it is safe to say that this outage is impacting millions of people at this very moment.

Users have taken to social media to confirm the service downtime, with some even making lighthearted jokes about the situation. However, the fact that Google News is currently broken has raised concerns and created an ominous atmosphere among users.

This recent outage adds to a challenging week for Google. Just recently, over 2,500 pages of API documentation containing details about Google’s search algorithm were accidentally made public. Liz Reid, the company’s head of search, acknowledged that Google’s new AI Overview tool had provided questionable responses to user concerns, which quickly went viral on social media. In a blog post, Reid stated that they take user feedback seriously and strive to maintain a high standard.

CTN News has reached out to Google for a response regarding the Google News outage. We will update this page as soon as we receive any further information.
