Google Unveils Veo: A New Generative AI Video Model for High-Quality Clips

blankGoogle recently announced its new generative AI video model called Veo, developed by its DeepMind AI division. Veo is capable of creating high-quality, realistic videos in various cinematic styles. The goal of Veo is to make video production accessible to everyone, whether they are seasoned filmmakers or aspiring creators. The model supports text-to-video, video-to-video, and image-to-video transformations.

To showcase Veo’s capabilities, Google partnered with polymath artist Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, to test the model through his creative studio, Gilga. DeepMind posted several videos created by Veo on its YouTube page and X account, demonstrating its ability to generate stunning visuals, including scenes of neon cities, jellyfish swimming in the ocean, cowboys riding horses, and lifelike human scenes.

The videos created by Veo are nearly indistinguishable from live action or computer-generated animations. It provides an unprecedented level of creative control and understands cinematic terms like timelapse or aerial shots of a landscape. Veo can quickly make high-quality edits to AI-generated videos or user-uploaded clips from text prompts. It can also apply editing commands to initial videos and create new, edited videos.

One significant improvement of Veo over previous models like Sora is its consistency between video frames. Veo relies on cutting-edge latent diffusion transformers to reduce inconsistencies and keep characters, objects, and styles in place as they would appear in real life. Google added more details to the captions of each video in its training data to improve overall quality.

All Veo videos are embedded with SynthID, Google’s content credentials tracking watermarking, making them easily detectable as AI-generated content. Veo is the culmination of years of research at DeepMind, building upon earlier advances in generative AI. However, Veo is currently only available to select creators in private preview through VideoFX by joining the waitlist. Google plans to bring some of Veo’s capabilities to YouTube Shorts and other products in the future.
