Gemini Live: Google’s New AI Chatbot Threatens OpenAI’s ChatGPT
Gemini Live, the latest feature from Google, has emerged as a potential rival to OpenAI’s popular AI tool, ChatGPT. Although it is too early to definitively claim that Gemini Live surpasses ChatGPT, my brief experience with the new Google chatbot at a recent press briefing suggests that OpenAI should be concerned.
One notable improvement with Gemini Live is its ability to engage in continuous voice conversations. As a Gemini Advanced subscriber, I previously had to tap the microphone button to prompt a response. However, with the introduction of Gemini Live, I can now have uninterrupted conversations, similar to the experience with ChatGPT. This enhancement allows Google’s AI chatbot to seamlessly respond to ongoing spoken interactions, setting it apart from Siri or Google Assistant.

Interestingly, Gemini Live can be interrupted without the need to tap any buttons. In my conversation, I asked a question about sleep while Gemini Live was discussing the benefits of exercise. The chatbot seamlessly transitioned into providing advice on improving sleep without any prompting. This feature showcases the natural flow of conversation and enhances the user experience.
Moreover, Gemini Live’s future capabilities are promising. It was announced at the Made by Google event that the chatbot will soon be able to “see” using a smartphone camera. This means that users can point the camera at math equations or their bedroom to receive assistance or inspiration. Additionally, Gemini Live aims to become a better researcher, offering step-by-step plans to achieve various goals. This feature can save users time and effort by providing comprehensive guides on complex tasks, such as starting a restaurant business.
To access Gemini Live, one must be a Gemini Advanced subscriber. The feature will officially launch on Tuesday, August 13th, marking Google’s effort to catch up with ChatGPT in terms of voice capabilities. This development positions Gemini Live as a true threat to OpenAI’s chatbot tool.
