Google’s Password Manager Now Allows Limited Sharing with Family Members

Google Password Manager now offers the ability to share passwords with family members, providing an added layer of security against potential theft. This new feature, implemented by Google in recent weeks, allows users to securely share their passwords with multiple members of their family group. Previously, Google Password Manager did not have this capability.

In a statement published on a support website, Google explained that when a password is shared, family members will receive a copy of it in their own Google Password Manager, ready for use. This ensures that all family members have easy access to the shared password without any hassle.

Although Google first announced this functionality in February 2024 as part of Safer Internet Day, the release of Google Play Services version 24.20 in May 2024 made it available to users. However, it’s important to note that password sharing is restricted to members of the same family group. To take advantage of this feature, users must create a family group and invite family members to join.

Once you are a member of a family group and responsible for managing your passwords, Google Password Manager will provide you with a “share” option. By clicking this button, you can easily share a password with another individual. However, it’s worth mentioning that the Chrome desktop capability may not be fully activated at this time, according to Android Authority.

Google has highlighted several potential applications for this technology. For example, it could be useful for families coordinating with daycare through a single account or for children allowing their parents to access their school assignments. These scenarios demonstrate the versatility and practicality of this password sharing feature.

In conclusion, Google Password Manager’s new password sharing function offers an enhanced level of convenience and security for families. By allowing secure password sharing within a family group, Google aims to make password management easier and safer for its users.
