Harnessing the Power: Using a Mazda CX-90 PHEV as a Phone Charger

Using a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) as a phone charger may seem unconventional, but in a pinch, it can prove to be a lifesaver. When faced with a sudden power outage, I found myself in a predicament with a low battery on my phone. Fortunately, I had a 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV parked outside, fully charged and ready to assist.

In this unexpected situation, the convenience of having a PHEV with its ability to tap into its battery power as an alternative power source became evident. While some may argue that using a car as a phone charger contributes to a large carbon footprint, it’s crucial to recognize that emergencies call for creative solutions. Besides, this concept is not too far off from the idea of vehicle-to-grid setups, where cars serve as energy sources for the grid.

With the Mazda CX-90 PHEV “running,” I set up a cozy tailgate ambiance, complete with music flowing from the car and doors open to enjoy the perfect weather. The advantage of not needing to use the climate control system meant that I could maximize the PHEV’s battery power to charge my phone without relying on the gasoline engine. Theoretically, with just the battery pack and USB ports, the Mazda could fully charge my phone over 700 times. However, considering energy inefficiencies and the energy required to idle the car itself, the actual number would be lower but still significant.

Although PHEVs offer the versatility of using their electric power, their true potential is realized when they are regularly plugged in. Investing in a level 2 charging setup at home makes it effortless to charge the vehicle quickly. In just under 2½ hours using a 40-amp home setup, the Mazda can go from 0 to full charge. This means that even with frequent errands, one can utilize all 26 miles of electric range. For shorter trips or if charging is available at both ends of the journey, it’s possible to go about daily routines without ever needing to utilize the gas engine. However, it’s important to note that the PHEV’s weight, nearly 5,000 pounds, doesn’t make it particularly sporty with only the electric motor powering it.

Overall, the experience of using a PHEV as a phone charger highlighted both the convenience and limitations of these vehicles. While they can serve as reliable power sources during emergencies, their full potential is realized when they have access to regular charging. With advancements in battery technology and charging infrastructure, PHEVs offer a viable solution for reducing carbon emissions while maintaining flexibility for various driving needs. As we continue to prioritize sustainability and efficiency in transportation, PHEVs present a compelling option for those looking to make a positive impact without compromising on versatility and convenience.
