Hongqi, the oldest Chinese car brand, is preparing to enter the UK market in 2026 with two electric models. The brand, which was founded in 1958 and is owned by Chinese manufacturing group First Automobile Works (FAW), is known for its luxury vehicles used by the president of China and other dignitaries. Hongqi has been expanding overseas since 2018 and currently offers electric vehicles in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Now, the company is targeting Europe as a key market for high-end and luxury vehicles.
At the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Hongqi showcased its ambitious plans for European expansion. Yang Dayong, FAW’s president of overseas operations, expressed the brand’s desire to make a new start in other regions, understanding that European customers value high product quality. Hongqi’s European expansion will initially focus on two new electric models: the EH7 saloon and EHS7 SUV. These models feature unique styling compared to the brand’s petrol and hybrid vehicles, indicating a focus on attracting a younger audience.
While a specific launch date for the UK market has not been confirmed, FAW design chief Giles Taylor stated that the brand is aiming for a 2026 entry. This timeframe allows for right-hand-drive conversions of the electric models and the establishment of a dealer network. Additionally, Hongqi plans to upgrade both models before entering the market. The EH7 and EHS7 are positioned as premium offerings, with Taylor comparing them to the BMW 5 Series in terms of target market.
The top-end versions of the EH7 and EHS7 feature a dual-motor powertrain with impressive performance capabilities. The saloon can accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds, while the SUV achieves the same feat in 3.9 seconds. Both models offer a choice of battery capacities, with the larger 111kWh battery providing an official WLTP range of 360 miles for the saloon and 329 miles for the SUV. The EVs also boast fast-charging capabilities, with speeds of up to 246kW, as well as rear-wheel steering and air suspension.
Hongqi’s focus on bespoke and customization sets it apart in the European market. The brand aims to offer a high level of personalization to customers, leveraging its status as the oldest luxury brand from China. In the next five years, Hongqi plans to launch 12 new products in overseas markets, although it has not specified which models will reach Europe and the UK. While the initial emphasis is on electric vehicles, hybrid models may be introduced in the future to align with market conditions.
Overall, Hongqi’s entry into the UK market in 2026 represents an exciting development in the automotive industry. As a renowned luxury brand from China, Hongqi has the potential to capture the attention of European customers who value high-quality products and customization options. With its stylish electric models and ambitious plans for expansion, Hongqi is poised to make a significant impact in the UK automotive market.
