How to Opt Out of Elon Musk’s X AI Training | A Step-by-Step Guide

X, formerly known as Twitter, has introduced a new option within its Settings tab that allows users to decide whether their data can be used for training and fine-tuning the platform’s AI chatbot, Grok. This move signifies X’s commitment to integrating AI throughout its platform. The company deserves credit for informing users about how their data is used and for giving them the choice to share it with xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company that powers Grok.

Despite these positive aspects, X has made the questionable decision to opt users into data sharing by default. Furthermore, users had to discover the opt-in and opt-out options on their own, which is not ideal. However, X has provided a solution for those who wish to opt out of AI training using their data.

To disable the data sharing feature, users can follow a few simple steps. It’s worth noting that this setting can only be disabled on X for the web, not via the iOS or Android apps. First, click on the Settings and Privacy option on the left-hand sidebar menu. Then, navigate to the Privacy and Safety tab within the Settings tab. Scroll down to the Data sharing and personalization section and select the Grok option. Here, users will find the “Allow your posts as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok to be used for training and fine-tuning” setting, which is initially checked. Click on the checkmark to deselect and opt out. Additionally, users have the option to delete any conversation history with X’s Grok AI chatbot.

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, which powers Grok, has ambitious plans for the future. Musk has proposed a $5 billion investment from Tesla into xAI. However, X users who do not want their data to be used for this project can follow the steps outlined above.

In conclusion, X’s decision to offer transparency and choice regarding data usage is commendable. By providing users with the ability to opt out of AI training, the platform respects their privacy and preferences. It is important for users to be aware of these options and take the necessary steps to protect their data accordingly.
