Hyundai Ioniq 9: A New Electric Seven-Seater SUV to Rival the Volvo EX90

The automotive industry is witnessing a major shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) as manufacturers strive to meet the growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly transportation options. Hyundai, one of the leading players in the EV market, is set to introduce its latest offering, the Hyundai Ioniq 9. This electric seven-seater SUV is poised to take on the Volvo EX90 and is expected to be revealed later this year.

Renamed from Ioniq 7 to Ioniq 9 to avoid any misconception of being inferior to its twin, the Kia EV9, the Ioniq 9 will be built on the same extended version of the e-GMP platform as the EV9. It is also likely to feature the same 99.8kWh battery pack. The Kia EV9 offers two motor options, a 200bhp single-motor setup, and a more powerful 378bhp dual-motor setup, which provide impressive ranges of 349 and 313 miles, respectively.

One of the most exciting prospects for the Ioniq 9 is the potential for a hot N variant. The Kia EV9 GT, a performance-oriented version of the EV9, has already been spotted testing at the famous Nürburgring racetrack. This suggests that Hyundai might equip the Ioniq 9 with a similar 641bhp dual-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrain found in the Ioniq 5 N.

In terms of design, the Ioniq 9 will differentiate itself from the boxy EV9 with a sloping roofline and more curvaceous bodywork. It will retain some elements of the Seven concept, including its distinctive lighting signatures and flared haunches. However, prototypes of the Ioniq 9 have been seen with traditional B- and C-pillars and conventional door handles, indicating a departure from the frameless windows and rear coach doors seen in the concept.

Inside the Ioniq 9, expect a similar layout to the new Hyundai Santa Fe. The focal point will be the digital instrument display and infotainment touchscreen, with the latter angled towards the driver for easy access. Hyundai’s signature physical controls for audio and climate functions will be retained, ensuring a user-friendly experience. Less important functions, such as air direction, will be mapped to a touch panel between the climate dials. The gear selector will also be familiar to Santa Fe owners, featuring a twisting dial on the steering column.

The official unveiling of the Hyundai Ioniq 9 is expected before the end of this year, with deliveries scheduled for next year. Pricing is estimated to start between £60,000 and £70,000, offering a more affordable option compared to the Volvo EX90, which starts at around £90,000.

As the market for electric SUVs continues to expand, the Hyundai Ioniq 9 is poised to make a significant impact. With its impressive range, compelling design, and advanced features, it is set to challenge established players like the Volvo EX90. Hyundai’s commitment to electric mobility, combined with its track record of producing high-quality vehicles, makes the Ioniq 9 a promising addition to the EV market.
