Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster: A Purer Utility Vehicle with Added Versatility

Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster: A New Perspective on the Grenadier 4×4

Introduction:
The Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster pick-up variant offers a fresh take on the Grenadier 4×4. This new addition to the lineup raises the question of whether the perception of the Grenadier would have been different if the pick-up had been launched first. Comparisons to premium SUVs would be more forgiving if the Quartermaster had set the initial tone. Furthermore, the Quartermaster’s focus on utility raises the question of whether it has found its place as a purer utility vehicle.

Design and Styling:
The Quartermaster shares many similarities with the Grenadier Station Wagon, particularly in terms of its ladder chassis, solid axles, and recirculating-ball steering. However, the Quartermaster has a longer wheelbase and overall length due to its pick-up bed. This increased length does have some impact on its off-road capabilities. While the Quartermaster matches the Grenadier in terms of wade depth, ground clearance, and approach angle, it falls slightly short in terms of breakover and departure angles. The pick-up bed itself offers ample space and practicality, capable of holding a Euro pallet and supporting up to 225kg when open. The Quartermaster also boasts a maximum payload of 835kg and a towing capacity of 3500kg, similar to the Station Wagon.

Interior:
The Quartermaster’s interior closely resembles that of the Grenadier, with a focus on functionality and durability. The panoramic visibility and low window line contribute to a sense of space, enhanced by optional roof-mounted ‘safari’ windows. The flight deck ambience is evident in the placement of climate controls on the centre console and off-road-related switchgear on an overhead panel. The switchgear is designed with gloves in mind, and the central display can be controlled via touch or a rotary control. The Quartermaster’s rear seats are upright, offering more space behind them but sacrificing some comfort compared to the Station Wagon.

Engines and Performance:
The Quartermaster, like the Grenadier, offers a choice between BMW-sourced 3.0-litre petrol or diesel engines. Both powertrains are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and feature a standard low-range transfer box and locking centre differential. Optional front and rear locking differentials are also available. Both the petrol and diesel engines exhibit strong performance and responsiveness, making them well-suited for off-road adventures. The eight-speed automatic transmission is smooth and offers manual control if desired.

Ride and Handling:
While our test drive of the Quartermaster was limited to slower roads, it provided a glimpse into its ride and handling characteristics. The ride was settled and stable, albeit leisurely. The slow steering with mild self-centring remains a defining characteristic. Off-road capability is exceptional, with excellent visibility reminiscent of classic 4x4s like the Land Rover Defender or Mercedes G-Class. However, the turning circle is larger than the Grenadier’s, which can pose challenges in tight spaces. The Quartermaster offers an engaging off-roading experience, relying on driver involvement rather than advanced technology.

MPG and Running Costs:
The Quartermaster’s focus on robustness and lack of hybridization result in significant fuel consumption. While it’s too early to determine its long-term reliability and durability, initial reports suggest that the Grenadier holds its value well.

Conclusion:
With the addition of the Quartermaster pick-up variant, Ineos has expanded the appeal of the Grenadier. While still commanding a premium price, the Grenadier’s solid hardware and robust interior withstand scrutiny. The Quartermaster’s idiosyncrasies on the road are balanced by its off-road capabilities, surpassing those of premium SUVs. Ineos is finding its stride as a brand, and the Grenadier lineup is testament to their commitment to utility and functionality.
