Introducing Gmail Q&A: Chat with Google’s AI Assistant Gemini about Your Emails

Google has introduced a new feature for Gmail users on Android devices that allows them to chat directly with Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, about their emails in the Gmail app. This new feature, called Gmail Q&A, was rolled out to paying Gemini users and will soon be available on iOS devices as well.

With Gmail Q&A, users can access Gemini as a personal assistant within the Gmail app. They can ask Gemini to summarize emails or search for specific details related to their emails. For example, users can ask Gemini to catch them up on the emails about quarterly planning or inquire about the company’s spending on the last marketing event.

However, it’s important to note that as with any AI model, there may be occasional inaccuracies or errors when using this feature. Therefore, it’s advisable to exercise caution and not blindly trust everything Gemini tells you.

Previously, Gmail users could find information in their emails by using the search bar at the top of Google. While this search feature will still be available, Google is shifting its focus towards AI chatbots like Gemini. The Gemini button will be added next to the search bar, encouraging users to interact with the AI assistant to summarize the information they need. Gemini will still cite the source email in its answers, ensuring transparency and accountability.

To access the Gmail Q&A feature, paying users can click on the black star logo, which represents Gemini, in the top-right corner of the Gmail app. Currently, the feature only has access to users’ emails, but Google plans to expand its capabilities to include files in users’ Drive accounts in the future.

In June, Gmail Q&A was introduced to web users of Gmail who pay for Gemini or Google One AI Premium. These users pay a monthly fee of approximately $20 for access to AI features like Gmail Q&A. Google is targeting these paying users to justify the cost of the Gemini subscription and convince them of its value. Additionally, Google is integrating Gemini into its other products, such as Google Docs and Google Calendar, with the aim of generating revenue from these AI offerings.

Overall, Gmail Q&A provides an innovative way for users to interact with their emails and extract information more easily. While it may not be available to free Gmail users in the near future, Google is actively expanding its AI capabilities and pushing for the adoption of Gemini to enhance user experiences and drive revenue growth.
