Maybach, the ultra-luxury division of Mercedes-Benz, has finally answered the demands of its wealthy and famous clientele by releasing the 2025 Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series. This convertible Maybach is based on a car developed by AMG, making it the first Maybach to be based on an AMG vehicle. This posed a challenge for engineers, as they had to ensure that the convertible maintained the smooth and effortless driving experience associated with the Maybach brand.
To achieve this, the Maybach SL shares the SL 63’s air suspension and AMG Active Control hydraulic dampers, but with specific tuning. The steering system is also Maybach-specific, resulting in a more stable and less aggressive setup compared to the SL 63. Under the hood, the Maybach SL 680 features a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, same as the SL 63, producing 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. The transmission and all-wheel-drive system are shared, but tuned differently to provide a more balanced power split and a smoother acceleration experience.
While the Maybach SL 680 is slightly slower than the SL 63 in terms of 0-60 mph time, clocking in at 4 seconds flat, it offers a unique touch of gaudiness that sets it apart. Emblazoned with an abundance of Maybach logos, both inside and out, the SL 680 exudes opulence. From the 3D mesh Maybach logos on the lower airdam to the printed logos on the black cloth roof and leather door sills, no detail is spared. The optional Obsidian Black Metallic hood is particularly noteworthy, featuring the Maybach pattern incorporated in Graphite Grey.
Inside the SL 680, Maybach’s “signature comfort seats” upholstered in Crystal White Nappa leather await. The lack of a back seat is a deliberate choice by Maybach, as they deemed it unnecessary. Instead, there is a leather-lined parcel shelf with an aerodynamically designed double-bubble that matches the height of the seatbacks, providing an exclusive and unique touch.
The Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series, showcased during Monterey Car Week, addresses the demand for a Maybach convertible that was sparked by the Maybach Vision 6 Cabriolet concept shown at Pebble Beach in 2017. While not as extravagant as the concept, the SL 680 offers an open-top driving experience and an abundance of Maybach logos for those who crave luxury and exclusivity. Pricing for the SL 680 has not been announced, emphasizing its elite status as a car for the privileged few.
