The Ariel Nomad 2: A Performance Off-Roader with Exciting Updates
The Ariel Nomad 2, Ariel’s highly anticipated performance off-roader, has been unveiled ahead of its public debut at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed. This new model, priced at £65,000, has already generated significant interest, with 80 potential customers queuing up before it was even revealed to the public. While the Nomad 2 shares similarities with its predecessor, it boasts numerous mechanical improvements that enhance its performance and capabilities.
One of the most significant changes in the Nomad 2 is the adoption of a 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol engine from Ford. This engine, available in three different tunes, offers varying levels of power and torque depending on the owner’s preference. The standard gearbox is a Ford H-pattern six-speed manual, but Ariel also plans to offer a sequential six-speeder as an option. The company chose the Ford engine for its ease of sourcing compared to the previous Honda engine used in the Nomad 1.
With the increase in power, all variants of the Nomad 2 are expected to be faster than its predecessor, which was already known for its impressive acceleration. The adoption of the Atom’s disc brakes and the inclusion of standard ABS further add to the vehicle’s performance capabilities. Traction control and stability control are also incorporated to meet EU Small Series compliance, allowing the Nomad 2 to be sold in Europe.
In terms of design and construction, the Nomad 2 benefits from a stiffer chassis with thicker tubing and repositioned side members, improving cockpit access and increasing total chassis stiffness by 60%. Despite being slightly longer than the previous model, the Nomad 2’s weight only increases by a few percent. Preliminary data suggests a kerb weight of around 680kg for the standard model.
The Nomad 2’s suspension system consists of all-independent double-wishbone suspension with anti-dive and antisquat geometry. This setup promotes stability and allows for longer wheel travel, ensuring a comfortable and absorbent ride on rough roads while enabling faster navigation.
Inside the Nomad 2, drivers will find a familiar layout with composite bucket seats, a digital instrument pack, and clearly labeled switchgear. The vehicle also features high-mounted, self-protecting wiring designed to withstand challenging conditions.
In an interview with Simon Saunders, Director of Ariel, he explains the origins of the Nomad as a response to a customer’s request for an Atom with longer suspension travel. He also emphasizes Ariel’s commitment to creating usable and comfortable road cars that are also fun to drive. The Nomad’s success in a challenge against a rally car further demonstrates its capabilities as a serious off-roading vehicle that doesn’t compromise on enjoyment.
