BMW Unveils Fourth-Generation X3 with Radical New Look and Upgraded Chassis
The fourth-generation BMW X3 has been revealed, featuring a radical new look, a reworked interior, and an upgraded chassis. While an all-electric version is set to arrive next year, this latest model is an evolution of the G01 car that has been in production since 2017. Despite the emphasis on electric vehicles in the automotive industry, BMW has decided to continue offering petrol and diesel powertrain options for the fourth-gen X3.
The new X3 boasts a wide-reaching chassis overhaul aimed at providing “an even broader range of driving characteristics and added ride comfort.” The suspension has been reworked, with wider tracks, stiffer roll bar mounts, and reinforced rear axle mounts for improved stability. The steering system has also been upgraded to a new belt-driven setup. Additionally, buyers have the option to upgrade to active dampers instead of the standard passive ones.
In terms of powertrain options, BMW has retired the China-made iX3 from the X3 lineup, but the petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid options remain. The xDrive20 starts at £46,800, followed by the xDrive20d at £48,210. The xDrive30e plug-in hybrid, with a revised electrical system and larger battery, now offers an electric range of over 50 miles. The top-of-the-line X3 M50, priced at £64,990, is equipped with a 3.0-liter straight-six engine producing 396bhp.
One of the most noticeable changes to the X3 is its exterior design. It features BMW’s bold new design language, with a raised bonnet, a more prominent grille (which can light up as an option), and sleek new light designs at the front and rear. The X3 is slightly longer and wider than its predecessor, but the roof has been lowered for a more sporty silhouette.
Inside the cabin, the X3 has undergone a complete reinvention. The dashboard now features a minimalist design centered around a wraparound digital display that runs BMW’s latest-generation iDrive system. The climate control can be adjusted using a new haptic ‘Interaction Bar’ borrowed from the 7 Series. BMW has also focused on improving the material quality of the cabin, and there is now 20 liters of additional boot space for added practicality.
