Introducing Verne: Bugatti’s Venture into the World of Autonomous Electric Taxis

Bugatti, recognized for its high-performance sports cars, has set its sights on the future with the launch of a new brand called Verne. Verne aims to develop and operate a fleet of autonomous electric taxis in some of the world’s most congested cities. Named after the renowned French poet and novelist Jules Verne, this division represents Bugatti’s foray into the opposite end of the automotive sector. Led by Mate Rimac, Verne was initially known as Project 3 Mobility and seeks to revolutionize urban transportation.

Verne’s robotaxi stands out with its sleek and innovative design. The two-seater vehicle features a wedge-shaped body and is built on a purpose-designed platform solely for autonomous ride-hailing purposes. Unlike conventional cars, it does not include a steering wheel or pedals, emphasizing its dedication to fully autonomous operation. By focusing exclusively on this niche market, Verne aims to provide an unparalleled experience for riders.

The heart of Verne’s autonomous system lies in its advanced technology. Equipped with an array of cameras, radars, and lidar, along with Mobileye’s Drive software platform, Verne ensures a safe and adaptable ride for passengers. The system is designed to handle different weather conditions, various road types, and even local driving styles. This versatility allows Verne to excel in navigating the complexities of bustling cities.

Inside the robotaxi, passengers are treated to an extraordinary level of comfort and entertainment. The spacious cabin provides ample room for two individuals on reclining seats. A center console with a tablet and several buttons plus a captivating 43-inch dashboard screen enhance the passenger experience. In terms of customization, Verne offers a button called the Median that grants passengers control over starting and stopping the ride. This feature aims to instill confidence in passengers who may be hesitant about autonomous technology, allowing them to initiate their journey with a simple push of a button.

Verne’s commitment to user satisfaction is further reflected in its app-based service. With the Verne app, passengers can customize their ride preferences before the vehicle arrives. From ambient lighting to climate control, passengers have the ability to tailor their experience to their liking. This attention to detail ensures a personalized and enjoyable journey every time.

To maintain the highest standards of reliability and cleanliness, Verne has devised a unique system. After completing each shift, the robotaxis will autonomously return to what Verne refers to as the Mothership. The Mothership serves as a hub where the cars are inspected, cleaned, maintained, and charged in preparation for the following day. This proactive approach not only maximizes efficiency but also addresses one of the challenges faced by previous car-sharing services.

Verne’s ambition extends beyond its visionary concept. The brand plans to establish its manufacturing facility near Zagreb, Croatia, where production of the robotaxis will take place. Starting in 2026, Verne will launch its operations in Zagreb and gradually expand across Europe and the Middle East. With agreements already secured with 11 cities and ongoing discussions with over 30 more worldwide, Verne aims to revolutionize urban transportation on a global scale.

While Verne’s plans for the United States remain undisclosed at this time, it is clear that Bugatti’s venture into autonomous electric taxis represents a significant step forward in shaping the future of transportation. By combining cutting-edge technology with personalized comfort, Verne sets itself apart in an increasingly competitive market. As cities worldwide seek solutions for congestion and sustainability, Verne’s robotaxi concept offers a compelling vision for a more efficient and enjoyable urban travel experience.
