Investigation Launched into Power Loss and Brake Issues in 2022 Ram 1500 and Jeep Wagoneer: NHTSA Probes Complaints

NHTSA Investigating Power Loss Issue in 2022 Ram 1500 and Jeep Wagoneer

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into the 2022 Ram 1500 and Jeep Wagoneer equipped with the 5.7-liter V8 eTorque system. Owners have reported complaints about power loss, shifting into park, and emergency brake application while driving, leading to the NHTSA’s probe of these vehicles.

Currently, there have been 80 complaints filed regarding this issue, according to documents posted on the NHTSA website. The complaints reveal a common pattern: the engine shutting off unexpectedly, often while driving at slow speeds, followed by the vehicle automatically shifting into park and engaging the emergency brake. Afterward, some owners were able to restart the vehicle, but many reported a malfunction warning light with a battery fault symbol appearing on the dashboard. Additionally, several complaints mentioned a “low voltage condition fault” preventing the driver from restarting the vehicle.

It is worth noting that a recall issued for the 2021 model year Ram 1500s with the 5.7-liter eTorque system for an unrelated engine stall issue is not connected to the problem affecting the 2022 models. The recall for the 2021 models was due to a software issue causing an incorrect fuel mixture, whereas Ram/Jeep stated that the power loss in the 2022 models was likely caused by an electrical concern leading to engine shutdown, rather than an over-rich fuel condition.

Approximately 150,000 vehicles could potentially be affected by this issue. However, it is important to highlight that the NHTSA is still in the early stages of the investigation and has not issued a recall yet. Furthermore, no accidents, injuries, or fatalities have been reported thus far as a result of this specific issue.

As more information becomes available, we will continue to keep you informed about any developments regarding this investigation. Rest assured that both the NHTSA and the automaker will work diligently to ensure the safety and reliability of these vehicles moving forward.
