The Isuzu D-Max is making waves in the competitive “lifestyle” market, offering a unique proposition that sets it apart from its rivals. Unlike its competitors, such as the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Volkswagen Amarok, the D-Max boasts a significantly lower price tag. It provides a cost-effective way to own a large, rugged pick-up truck with a diesel engine.

Isuzu recognized that simply offering a workhorse vehicle wouldn’t be enough to attract customers in the lifestyle market. To stand out from the crowd, the D-Max comes equipped with luxurious features like snazzy 18-inch alloys, an eight-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and adaptive cruise control. It also offers off-road capabilities with features like a snorkel, winch, and all-terrain tires.

Despite its additional technology and components, the D-Max manages to maintain its value-for-money appeal. It strikes a balance between rough-and-ready charm and modern features that make it suitable for both towing boats and everyday use.

The Isuzu D-Max range offers various models to cater to different needs. The entry-level Utility model comes with interchangeable two- and four-wheel drive, a low-range gearbox, automatic headlights, cruise control, air conditioning, and Bluetooth. Stepping up to the DL20 model adds a locking rear differential, 18-inch alloys, infotainment display, and servo-assisted power steering. The DL40 model includes luxuries like LED headlights, touchscreen with smartphone mirroring, push-button ignition, and a reversing camera. The V-Cross model is the flagship variant, featuring a larger infotainment screen, dual-zone climate control, and lumbar support for the driver. There is also an option to add a camping kit with a two-man tent, sink, barbecue, awning, and foldaway chairs. At the top of the range, the Arctic Trucks AT35 edition and Mudmaster V-Cross offer additional off-road features like a winch, light-bar, snorkel, and all-terrain tires.

All models are powered by a 1.9-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine with 162bhp and 266lb ft of torque. The D-Max comes with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, but customers can opt for a six-speed Aisin automatic transmission. The automatic transmission is said to shift 25% faster than its predecessor.

When it comes to design and styling, the D-Max balances purposeful looks with functional features. It may be slightly less distinctive than some of its rivals but maintains its rugged appeal. The payload capacity for the tailgate is rated at 1000kg, similar to the Hilux and Ranger but slightly less than the Amarok. The D-Max offers good off-road capabilities with features like wading depth of 800mm, underbody protection, hill descent control, and competitive approach and departure angles.

Inside the cabin, the D-Max offers ample space and practicality. There is plenty of headroom and legroom for both driver and passengers, with comfortable seating positions. The interior surfaces are designed to withstand heavy use, with durable materials and buttons. However, the infotainment system falls short in terms of quality and user-friendliness. The touchscreen feels cheap and lacks intuitive controls, although it does support Apple CarPlay. The HVAC controls and storage spaces are well-designed and practical.

In terms of engines and performance, the D-Max’s 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine proves capable of handling the vehicle’s mass. It provides sufficient power for both on-road and off-road driving, although there is a slight flat spot in the lower and upper rev ranges. The D-Max offers an impressive towing capacity of 3500kg, making it suitable for hauling heavy loads. However, the engine is unrefined and noisy, particularly under load and in stop/start traffic.

When it comes to ride and handling, the D-Max offers stability and strong brakes. It feels stable at all speeds and on all terrains, with minimal body roll and well-controlled road manners. The steering, however, lacks precision and can feel vague, making it harder to judge the amount of lock required for corners. The low-speed ride can be busy, especially on rough road surfaces, but the D-Max offers a tight turning circle for maneuverability.

In terms of running costs, the D-Max’s affordability is one of its biggest selling points. It is cheaper to buy than its rivals, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. It also offers competitive fuel economy, with real-world figures surpassing Isuzu’s claimed mileage. However, the basic models may lack some equipment compared to premium rivals, and depreciation could be steeper.

Overall, while the Isuzu D-Max may not compete with more premium rivals like Ineos and Land Rover, it offers a compelling package for those looking for an affordable and capable pick-up truck. Its low price, off-road capabilities, and sturdy interior make it a decent proposition against more conventional competitors. The D-Max maintains its reputation as a value-for-money workhorse while offering modern features and a comfortable driving experience.
