Jaguar Commits to Formula E until 2030, Showcasing EV Technology and Reinvented Brand Image

Jaguar has announced that it will continue to participate in the Formula E World Championship until the end of 2030. The British brand has been racing in the electric single-seater series since the 2016-17 season and is set to compete in its 100th ePrix in Monaco this weekend. With 13 victories in Formula E, Jaguar is currently leading the manufacturers’ championship for the 2023-24 season.

The decision to commit to Formula E’s forthcoming Gen4 rules, which will begin in the 2026-27 season and run until 2029-30, demonstrates Jaguar’s dedication to accelerating the development of its new generation of electric road cars. As the brand transitions into a premium electric-only brand, the Formula E platform will serve as a showcase for Jaguar to highlight the strength of its EV technology and its reinvented brand image.

According to Jaguar motorsport boss James Barclay, the Formula E team will “continue to drive the rapid development of EV technology on the track.” This commitment not only reflects the confidence of JLR’s board in the value of competition but also aligns with the company’s wider Reimagine business strategy.

Jaguar has long recognized the importance of motorsport as a proving ground for developing new technology for electric powertrains. The brand has collaborated with Wolfspeed on silicon-carbide for use in semiconductors and with Castrol to re-refine used transmission fluid for competition use. These technologies will be utilized in Jaguar’s next-generation EVs.

As Formula E moves into the Gen4 era, technical details are still being finalized. However, Formula E bosses have stated that the future Gen4 cars will have significantly more power, with 804bhp and up to 939bhp of regenerative braking. This represents a significant increase from the current Gen3 cars, which have 469bhp and 804bhp respectively. The chassis for the Gen4 cars will be developed by Spark Racing Technologies, while Podium Advanced Technologies will supply the batteries, replacing WAE. Marelli will continue to produce the front motors, while manufacturers are free to develop their own rear motors.

Jaguar’s commitment to Formula E’s Gen4 era follows Nissan as the second manufacturer to make this commitment. This demonstrates the growing importance of electric racing and the role it plays in shaping the future of automotive technology.

In conclusion, Jaguar’s decision to remain in Formula E until 2030 not only highlights its dedication to the development of EV technology but also provides a platform to showcase its reinvented brand image. By participating in Formula E, Jaguar can demonstrate the performance and capabilities of its electric vehicles while pushing the boundaries of innovation in the industry. With the Gen4 era set to bring even more power and advancements, Formula E continues to pave the way for the future of electric racing and sustainable mobility.
