Jeep Confirms Midsize SUV to Replace Cherokee, Starting Under $40,000

Jeep is gearing up to release a new midsize SUV that will likely replace the outgoing Cherokee. While the focus in the automotive industry has been on electric vehicles, Jeep has confirmed that this crossover will stick with an internal combustion engine—at least initially. The company has hinted that there may be a hybrid version as well, offering customers a range of powertrain options.

Although Jeep has not revealed the name of the upcoming SUV, they did share that it will have a starting price below $40,000. This is in line with the current pricing of the outgoing Cherokee and the two-row Grand Cherokee. Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa made it clear that the vehicle will not be fully electric from the start, stating, “No. Not at the beginning.”

However, Jeep is not neglecting the electric market entirely. They have already introduced the new Wagoneer S EV and are working on the all-electric Recon. Additionally, Stellantis’ CEO Carlos Tavares has mentioned a forthcoming $25,000 EV. It’s unclear why this particular EV was not discussed during the reveal event.

Production of the midsize Jeep is set to begin in the second half of 2025, suggesting that it will be available as a 2026 model. While the Wagoneer S will remain strictly battery-electric, Filosa has hinted that the Recon’s platform could accommodate a hybrid option. This commitment to offering customers “freedom of choice” in powertrains aligns with Jeep’s overall strategy.

Overall, Jeep’s decision to release a midsize SUV with an internal combustion engine reflects their understanding of customer preferences and market demands. By offering a range of powertrain options, including potentially a hybrid version, Jeep aims to appeal to a wide range of consumers. With production set to begin in a few years, it will be interesting to see how this new SUV performs in the competitive automotive market.
