Jeep is expanding the options for its popular Gladiator pickup truck, not only in terms of exterior colors but also in powertrain choices. Antonio Filosa, the global CEO of the brand, shared the news on LinkedIn, announcing the addition of a 4xe trim for the Gladiator. This new variant will join the highly successful Jeep Wrangler 4xe and the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe as one of the top-selling plug-in hybrids in the United States.
Since the removal of the EcoDiesel option from the Gladiator lineup last year, buyers have only had access to the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine. However, with the introduction of the 4xe trim, the Gladiator will become both more fuel-efficient and more powerful. The current 4xe powertrain, if carried over without changes, will result in a significant boost in performance. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produces 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Combined with a starter/generator and an electric motor in the eight-speed automatic transmission, the 4xe trim will deliver an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Furthermore, a 17.3-kWh battery is expected to provide an all-electric range of at least 20 miles.
The availability of a plug-in hybrid option for the Gladiator comes as a welcome addition for those seeking both efficiency and power in their pickup trucks. It will provide customers with more versatility, as they can choose between fully electric driving or utilizing the hybrid powertrain for longer trips. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe have already proven to be successful in meeting customer demand for eco-friendly performance, and it is expected that the Gladiator 4xe will follow suit.
However, with this expansion in powertrain options comes an increase in price. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe already carries a price tag nearly $18,000 higher than its non-hybrid counterpart. Assuming a similar price difference for the Gladiator, it is estimated that the starting price for the plug-in hybrid pickup truck will be around $56,000 before destination charges. Fortunately, potential buyers can take advantage of a tax credit of up to $3,750 to help offset some of the additional cost.
While the Gladiator 4xe is still in the pipeline, Jeep enthusiasts can also look forward to other electric options in the brand’s lineup. The battery-electric Wagoneer S is expected to arrive later this year, followed by the battery-electric Recon. According to the latest UAW contract with Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, range-extended versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are also planned for release in 2025.
