Jeep, despite being the world’s largest 4×4 company, only holds a small portion of the British SUV market. With a 0.3% share, Jeep CEO Christian Meunier describes its presence as “virtually non-existent.” However, Jeep is determined to change that with the release of the Jeep Avenger electric crossover and the fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is a full-sized, premium off-roader that measures 4.91m long and 1.97m wide, similar in size to the Land Rover Discovery. Unlike the US version, which offers seven seats, the UK version only has five seats. The UK market currently only offers one engine option for the Grand Cherokee, a 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid, and one trim level, Summit Reserve, which comes with a hefty price tag of £85,615.
The Grand Cherokee’s monocoque construction is derived from Alfa Romeo’s Giorgio platform, which is also used in models like the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio. Despite their differences in size and purpose, these vehicles share a versatile platform that allows them to perform well in their respective segments.
The design of the Jeep Grand Cherokee embraces its American heritage with bold and brash styling elements. It features a flat-topped bonnet, a large chrome seven-slot grille, and slimmer headlights for a more aggressive look. The retro-inspired cues make the Grand Cherokee stand out from other SUVs on the market. However, its size may pose challenges on some UK roads, and the placement of the charge port on the passenger-side wing can be inconvenient for charging.
Inside the Grand Cherokee, you’ll find a mix of retro styling and modern features. The Stellantis Uconnect touchscreen system is straightforward and easy to use, and there are plenty of physical buttons for various functions. However, the powertrain can feel less refined and efficient compared to its competitors.
The driving experience in the Grand Cherokee is honest and straightforward, although it lacks the sophistication and composure of European rivals. The ride is relatively smooth, with decent noise absorption, but the steering can feel heavy and springy at higher speeds. While it may not offer the same level of refinement as some competitors, the Grand Cherokee’s performance and off-road capabilities make it enjoyable in everyday driving.
When it comes to running costs, the Grand Cherokee’s electric range is relatively short compared to rivals, limiting its ability to keep fuel costs down. The larger battery size allows for up to 25 miles of electric-only driving, but this falls short of competitors like the Range Rover Sport and Mercedes GLE plug-in hybrids, which offer around 70 miles of electric range. The Grand Cherokee’s economy on the combined WLTP cycle is rated at 108.7mpg, but this figure drops significantly once the battery is depleted.
The Grand Cherokee is available in four trim levels: Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit Reserve. Each trim offers a range of features, with Summit Reserve being the top-spec option. However, even with its generous equipment, the Grand Cherokee’s high price and company car costs may be difficult to justify for many buyers.
Overall, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a characterful and charming SUV with retro American styling and excellent off-road performance. However, its poor electric range, lack of a seven-seat option, and high price make it a hard sell compared to competitors. While the Grand Cherokee may appeal to those who appreciate its unique style and capabilities, there are more recommendable options in the market that offer better efficiency and value for money.
