Jeep is set to reveal its first-ever electric car, the Jeep Wagoneer S, on May 30th. This electric SUV promises impressive sports car performance and a range of over 300 miles. While the smaller Avenger model will be limited to Europe, the Wagoneer S will be available for global sale, with sales in the UK beginning early next year.
To build anticipation for the official debut in New York, Jeep has released a preview video showcasing the Wagoneer S taking on its primary competitor, the Tesla Model Y, at California’s Willow Springs Raceway. In the video, the 600bhp Jeep outpaces the highest-performance version of the Model Y in a 0-60mph sprint, clocking in at 3.4 seconds compared to the Model Y’s 3.5 seconds.
The impressive acceleration of the Wagoneer S can be attributed to its 617lb ft of torque, nearly as much as the supercharged V8 engine found in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. It’s worth noting that the Wagoneer S will soon replace the Trackhawk as the fastest-accelerating model in Jeep’s lineup.
In terms of design and features, the range-topping Wagoneer S boasts a sleek new look that sets it apart from previous Jeep models. Inside the cabin, there are at least four digital screens, including a digital dial display, a large central infotainment touchscreen, a smaller touchscreen for climate control, and another large touchscreen for the front passenger. The steering wheel features several buttons, and the dashboard seems to have haptic feedback buttons.
Jeep promises that the Wagoneer S will come equipped with a host of premium features. A panoramic sunroof will be standard, along with ambient lighting. Additionally, customers will have the option to upgrade to a 19-speaker audio system.
The Wagoneer S will be one of the first vehicles to utilize Stellantis’s new STLA Large architecture, which it shares with the upcoming Wrangler-esque Recon model. In the US, Jeep already sells combustion-engined Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models, but the all-new electric variant will offer a fresh take on the iconic nameplate.
